Description

CASE STUDY CHAPTER 11 1. What are the management, organizational, and technology challenges posted by selfdriving cars? Even though self-driving cars has been one the most popular innovations lately, it seems scary and untrustworthy for regular use for many people. Obviously, self-driving cars is a smart business investment and could solve many issues such as traffic, safety, and time conflicts, however at the same time innovation can create a lot of new problems too. As an example, self-driving cars can make taxi, uber, and lyft drivers lose their job. Another factor safety could not be guaranteed if another driver is not following rules. Hre comes a good question if autonomous cars can ever adjust and react to human behavior while driving? The management challenge that all auto companies have is persuasion in safety to customers. Undoubtedly, the most important aspect is to guarantee safety and accuracy of the car. According to the case, 90% of all car accidents are caused by any type of human error. Obviously, it is easier to blame someone else and that is why many people are not willing to admit this fact, however, that is true. Management team needs to focus on putting safety above financial gains and persuade customers that their safety is a top priority for them. From organizational standpoint by making people switch to self-driving cars there is a challenge that people will be losing job. However, even current jobs will be lost, by the use of self-driving cars a lot of new jobs will be created. The self-driving car does not only influence jobs, but the entire infrastructure since use of public transport and other infrastructures will change. Organizational challenges will have to deal with that change

of creating and providing new jobs and coming up with a solution for a right change in use of infrastructure. Technology challenges also focus on safety. While autonomous cars have sensors, cameras, lidars, maps, etc. integrated in their cars, it remains difficult for technology to completely replace human behavior, As mentioned in the case, autonomous cars’ technology systems have difficulty to assess its surroundings and have difficulty in taking best decisions in these situations. That is why people still want to control the car by themselves and keep their hands on the wheel, while auto drive mode is on. The technology should focus on developing and implementing human aspect of driving. 2. Are self-driving cars good business investments? Explain your answer. I believe that self-driving cars is a good business investment from standpoint that it will continue to develop since a lot of parties are willing to replace regular cars with innovative ones. It is just a question of time. When technology gets to a level that it provides safety, the majority of people with average income will switch from a regular car to a driver-less car. I believe this investing in self-driving cars could provide a great return on investment because travel time would be used more productively which is a huge and important factor in todays’ world. 3. What ethical and social issues are raised by self-driving car technology? Responsibility brings an ethical issue because it creates new case if car on a selfdrive mode hits another car. Who will be guilty in this case? Person who was not operating the car, or the manufacturer of a car? When the car crashes because of uncertain circumstances it is difficult to put the blame on someone.

Another ethical issue is insurance. Obviously, insurance for self-drive car should be different from a regular insurance we used to have. In addition, with the development of driver-less cars ethical standards need to be adhered. 4. Will cars really be able to drive themselves without human operators? Explain your answer. I believe that in some point in future, driver-less cars will exceed regular cars and later will completely replace regular cars and will be a common thing. Technology improves every day and will be able to provide safety and security. With the fast rate of the development, I expect it to happen within 30 years. While many people believe that driving cars manually is safer, I accept the fact that 90% of accidents are caused by human error. The faster all humans switch to a new type of cat the less accidents we will have left. When only driver-less cars will be left on the roads amount of accidents will be close to 0% and other problems like traffic will be eliminated...
