Description

Case Study Learning Unit 5: Effective Delegation

Assume you are the team leader for a team composed of six staff members. On your team, you have two seasoned registered nurses, one registered nurse who is floating to your floor from another medical unit, one certified nurse aide, and one new graduate registered nurse who has been on your unit for 3 weeks. You have assigned six of the unstable patients to the two seasoned nurses. One of the patients is scheduled for colon resection this morning. One patient, who is a post–right lobe thoracotomy, is scheduled for discharge and will need discharge teaching. One diabetic patient is postoperative day 1 from appendectomy, continues to be nauseated, and is on a patient-controlled analgesic. The remaining patients are currently stable and require minimal assistance. Please provide thorough answers and rationale.

Question #1 What patient should you assign to the float nurse and why? I would assign the post right lobe thoracotomy who is scheduled for discharge and needs teaching to the float nurse. This job just requires going over discharge paperwork and teaching, and it does not require any certain experience. Question #2 Which patient or patients should you assign to the new graduate nurse and why? The new grad can be assigned the patient scheduled for a colon resection and the diabetic post op day 1 with nausea on a PCA. Since it is scheduled in the morning, the colon resection will be off the floor, and she can focus her care on the diabetic patient. The new grad can administer antiemetics to the diabetic patient and focus on prioritizing and learning new things. Question #3 What tasks could you delegate to the certified nurse aide and why? The nurse aide can do vital signs, assist in feedings, and assisting in ambulation in patients who are stable and require minimal assistance....
