1. What other products or services might lend themselves to Mycoskie’s one-for-one model of social entrepreneurships? A large problem underdeveloped countries face is a lack of clean water. Companies such as Starbucks are known for donating profits to reputable charities that work to provide these people with water. A beneficial product that would greatly improve the quality and quantity of lives is medicine. 2. In what ways has the philanthropic dimension of the business actually supported the expansion and profitability of the business? In terms of TOMs, the foundation of the company and their philanthropy have provided a competitive advantage. The one-for-one model has allowed the company to be well known and has been an effective marketing strategy compared to other shoes. 3. If you had a choice between purchasing products or services that were developed using either a social entrepreneurship model or a tradition-for-profit model, which would you choose? Why? When possible, I prefer to choose social entrepreneurship products and services. This allows me to give back to others rather than putting money in the pockets of corporations that do not have an agenda that goes beyond generating profit. If I can pay the same, or similar, price for a product that supports organizations that seek to improve worldwide problems. 4. Does the business model of TOMS shoes constitute a preferential option for the poor or is it just another example of charity? Why or why not? Though TOMS serves the great purpose of helping the poor, it too fills the purpose of generating a profit. The company fulfills “at least in part, the requirements of both capitalist market theory and Catholic Social Ethics”....
