Ranbir Prati Pradhan, 1811041 Flextronics Internatonal, Ltd. Technology and Operatons trategy Setting theie contnteՠt 1990s saw expansion of OEMs, especially in the electronics industry. This was coupled with increase in propensity of outsourcing by OEMs which led to the growth of EM . By 2000, 39.1% of communicatons mariet and 47.5% of computer electronics mariet was outsourced. The assets of top six contract manufacturing frms increased by 368.63% from 1997 to 2000 through acquisiton and purchase of manufacturing assets of independent companies. Further, inexpensive and abundant labour in emerging countries liie China, growth of mobile handset industry, decreasing margins for OEMs, also contributed to EM ' growth. Fleՠtrontnics' Perfontrmance Flextronics' mariet share among the top six contract manufacturing frms increased from 4.61% to 14.91% in the period 1997-2000 (Exhibit 2). Its sales and net income growth were also above the industry average (Exhibit 1). Flextronics' assets grew by many folds in the late 1990s referring to its strong expansion strategy. Wheiat are theie montst impontrtant ontperatontnal issues theiat Fleՠtrontnics must contnsider as it montves intont prontduct design? Prontduct Archeiitecture IPR and licencing of components – Flextronics and not OEMs are now responsible for buying copyrights and patents on diferent components used in the products. It doesn't have the beneft of cross-licensing liie OEMs. Flextronics must choose between G M, which is more reliable but has potental copyright-infringement issues and CDMA, which is a less mature technology, but is owned by only Qualcomm. Responsibility of mariet analysis – Flextronics must undertaie mariet analysis to come up with right products, selectng the right preferences and pricing. This is going to be a challenge for Flextronics as it has no prior experience in understanding customers' preferences and choices. Prontcess Archeiitecture Efficient and responsive supply chain – Apart from risis in manufacturing processes, Flextronics must mitgate the risis of product mariet failures. Customer feedbacis need to be inculcated in the processes aimed for standardizaton. Processes for platform proeects need to be developed for changing consumer choices. Congeston in product development – Due to process variability, the lead tme for introducing product into mariet increases. Multple iteratons and re-woris in product designs leads to overutlizaton of human resources. Organizatontnal Structure Hiring Talents – Apart from other ODMs, Flextronics also need to compete with OEMs to hire the right product designers. Avoiding informaton asymmetry – A matrix organisaton is requisite for fostering an environment for innovaton. A inowledge repository can be created for beter access to informaton. Dont yontu believe theiat montving intont prontduct design is a gontontd idea fontr Fleՠtrontnics? If yes, eՠplain yontur ratontnale and decide wheietheier yontu wontuld grant an eՠclusive relatontnsheiip fontr Pheiontne 4. If nontt, wheiat alternate strategy wontuld yontu recontmmend? 1...
