Aim This unit introduces the fundamental concepts of finance theory and the tools of financial decision making in the context of the Australian institutional environment. These concepts relate primarily to the time value of money, risk and return, capital budgeting and capital structure. The unit's purpose is to develop an understanding of the basic practices of financial management from the perspective of a firm (both large and small). Students examine the investment, financing and dividend decisions of corporations. Original materials in this unit were developed with the support of the academic staff in the School of Business.

The electronic version of this text has been made available at no expense to you, and links to this eText will be provided in each week's learning materials.

Scientific calculator To complete this unit, you will need to purchase a scientific calculator. This will be required to complete activities and assignments from Week One of the Teaching Period. The preferred scientific calculator is the Casio fx-82. This guide on Using the Casio fx-82AU PLUS scientific calculator (PDF 769 KB) (Thompson 2008) will help you familarise yourself with how to use the calculator.

Minimum requirements to pass this unit of study In order to achieve a pass in this unit of study, you must:   

achieve an overall mark of at least 50%; and achieve the pass mark (50%) in the final examination. Submit every assessment

All of the assessments in this unit are mandatory. This means that you must make a submission for each of these assessments. You don’t necessarily have to achieve a pass mark for each assessment, but you must submit every assessment – failure to do so means that you will receive a Fail Non-Submit (FNS) grade for the unit. It is required that students attempt all available assignment elements. An automatic Fail Non - Submission grade will be awarded if any assignment task is not submitted/completed as per the details specified.

Extensions, late submissions and Special Consideration Extension of due date for submission Requests for extensions of up to 48 hours will be considered by your OLA, provided the request is made in writing and contains the reasons for your request. Such requests should be made using the extension request form, located with the assignment information in Canvas. This must be received prior to the submission date and time. Beyond this, you may apply for an extension of the due date for an assignment task if extenuating circumstances outside your control cause significant disruption to your capacity to study effectively. Applications should be submitted with evidence of extenuating circumstances to your Unit Coordinator. Applications may be submitted before, on or up to two days after (by 5pm) the due date of an assignment. For team assignments, all teammates must agree to the extension. If an extension of the submission date is not approved, the late penalty will apply from the due date as per the following late submission clause.

Late submission A student who submits a late assignment may be penalised by 10% per day up to 10 days i.e. marks equal to 10% of the assignment’s worth will

be deducted as a 'flat rate' from the mark awarded. For example, for an assignment with a possible highest mark of 50, the student’s awarded mark will have five marks deducted per late day. Saturday and Sunday count as one day each. Assignments will not be accepted after the marked assignment task has been returned to students who submitted the task on time except where compulsory items of assessment must be submitted. An assignment submitted any time after the due date will be deemed to be a late submission and late submission penalties will accrue immediately from the due time and date.

Special Consideration Special Consideration may be given to students whose performance during the teaching session, or in an assignment or exam has been affected by serious misadventure, accident or extenuating circumstances beyond their control. Applying for and receiving Special Consideration means that those circumstances are taken into account when we calculate your grade. All applications for Special Consideration must contain appropriate supporting documentation to substantiate the circumstances that are impacting on your studies. Applications without supporting documentation will not be considered.

Essential readings Each week, you will be required to undertake a number of readings in the learning materials as part of the unit requirements. In addition to all of the essential readings linked in the modules of this unit, you can also view a full reference list at the end of the modules list.

Additional resources Further to the required readings listed within the units, you may be provided a number of additional resources. These resources will be provided to you by your OLA in the form of Announcements or Discussion Board posts from your online classroom.

Student responsibilities and conduct Student responsibilities

Familiarise yourself with University policies on assessment and examinations. Ensure that you understand the requirements, including timetables, for examinations and other assignment tasks. Ensure you read and understand the assignment requirements and note the submission dates, and seek assistance from the Unit Coordinator when needed. Notify relevant staff (e.g. OLA, Unit Coordinator, Disability Advisor) as soon as possible prior to, or at the beginning of, the teaching period to accommodate special requirements. Submit individual and unassisted assignment work, except as otherwise

permitted. Cheating, plagiarism, fabrication or falsification of data will be severely dealt with. For further information, see the Student misconduct rule. Behave ethically and appropriately, avoiding any action or behaviour which would unfairly disadvantage or advantage another student. Where group work is assigned, ensure that every group member has the opportunity to contribute in a meaningful way. Access your learning materials in Canvas: As a condition of your enrolment you must actively engage with your learning materials and demonstrate commitment to your studies. You can access your learning materials from the Thursday before the teaching period starts. If you do not access your learning materials by the fourth week of each teaching period, you will be automatically withdrawn and cease to be enrolled. Student conduct and behaviour

Engage with all learning materials and your OLA—failure to attend is often the main cause for low final grades. Respect the needs of other students who are participating in any online discussion. Use discussion boards constructively—they are there for interaction between students, and between OLAs and students. Posts may be removed from the relevant discussion board if they do not comply with WSU's Student code of conduct. If issues arise with other students, or your OLA, please contact your Unit Coordinator in the first instance rather than broadcasting your concerns in a public forum.

Disability Service Sometimes students with a disability, mental health condition or medical condition require reasonable adjustments to enable full access to and participation in education. Students with a disability or chronic health condition should contact the Disability Service team. You may also be eligible for assistance if you have a temporary injury such as a broken limb. Your special needs can be addressed by Western Sydney University Disability Service who can negotiate and distribute an Academic Integration Plan that outlines recommendations for university teaching and examination staff. You must notify the University Disability Advisor of your disability or condition within one week after the commencement of a unit of study to allow the University to make reasonable adjustments.

What you can expect from the teaching team Unit Coordinator and Online Learning Advisors

Details about your Unit Coordinator (UC) and Online Learning Advisor (OLA) will be posted via a welcome message in Canvas at the commencement of the teaching period. In this welcome message, you can expect to view a short bio and specific details of their consultation times and when they will generally be available online for you. Contact turnaround times During the teaching period, your OLA will be online throughout each week. For other enquiries, the turnaround time is a maximum 48 hours for responses on discussion boards and 24 hours for emails that you send to them directly. Student Advisors Student Advisors are the one-stop-shop for student support for Western Sydney University Online students. You can speak to a Student Advisor about anything to do with:      

Assess students’ work fairly, objectively and consistently, and when in doubt consult with the Unit Coordinator or Program Director. Provide students with appropriate, helpful and explanatory feedback on all work submitted for assessment. Make reasonable accommodation (e.g. length of time to complete) in assignment tasks and examinations for students with special requirements, and seek assistance from the Disability Advisor and Counsellor where appropriate and needed. Ensure deadlines for the submission of examination papers to the Academic Registrar are met. Immediately report to the Unit Coordinator any instances of student cheating, collusion and/or plagiarism.

Staff code of conduct

Act in good faith and with honesty, integrity, transparency and impartiality.

Act with diligence and responsiveness, and treat other teaching staff with fairness, respect and courtesy without discrimination or harassment. Foster and protect the reputation of the University. Carry out duties as best you can within your delegated authority, constantly enhancing your professional knowledge. Be accountable for all actions and decisions, providing documentation and sound reasons for them. Do not act in a manner that inhibits another person from fulfilling the requirements of their position. Respect the confidentiality of entrusted information. Be alert to issues of conflict of interest and take action to declare and avoid them. Use the University resources properly and in accordance with work health and safety obligations. Report all fraud and corrupt conduct.

At the end of the teaching period you will be given the opportunity to complete a Student Feedback on Unit (SFU) questionnaire to assess the unit. You will also have the opportunity to complete an Online Learning Advisor Feedback (OLAF) questionnaire to provide feedback on your OLA.
