Description

Kiesh Easterwood Professor Stanley 12/1/2019 CH 17 Bandura Reflection - Social Cognitive Theory The Social Cognitive theory of Bandura is closely related to Skinner’s theory of Behavioral analysis, yet there are some definite distinctions between the two. First social cognitive theory states that behavior can be modified by external stimuli, yet the influence of the individual on the environment is just as pertinent. The synergy between both internal and external factors is one of the strongest points made by Bandura. Social cognitive theory is the only personality theory that I am not slightly critical of. Bandura’s theory seems to present a link between behaviorist and cognitive psychological theories. A large emphasis is placed upon observational learning. When applying social cognitive theory to Kanye West and I, I found that many of our behavioral tendencies can be explained by the theory yet more complex behavior doesn’t apply. His beliefs regarding the four core features of human agency can explain seemingly erratic behavior of Mr. West. Kanye’s Intentionality in life is to transcend normal levels of artistic influence and change the world to make it a more beautiful place for everyone. This has been a recent exclamation by Kanye. Yet if you understand this his ultimate goal, his seemingly narcissistic actions make more sense. As an artist, which you must be able to intrinsically feel and reflect. I find myself frequently engaging in self-reactive and self-reflective cognitions, Kanye shows this through his music and seems to continually progress. For both of us, Dysfunctional behavior seems to mostly manifest itself in aggression and depression. Growing up I was frequently exposed to the aggressive tendencies of my father, and the cultural differences between Caucasian and African American norms. In the black community depression is stigmatized and aggression is normalized; in white culture it seems to be the opposite. Kanye has acknowledged he can be too aggressive, from the perspective of observed

learning this makes sense as he probably also observed aggression early in life. As I was exposed to both aspects of dysfunction, my issues with both seem to make more sense. Bandura’s believe we are fluid and flexible, and I completely agree. We cannot unlearn bad behavior, instead we can learn actively, become more self-aware and recondition ourselves. To do this we must be aware of who we spend time with, are drawn towards, and what we choose to expose ourselves to on a regular basis....
