Firearms/ Ballistic Evidence: Chapter 14  

Forensic ballistics is the science of analyzing firearms, bullets and bullet impacts Ballistics fingerprinting is analyzing firearm evidence to determine if that particular firearm was used in the crime.

Handguns: Two types of handguns Revolver: uses a revolving chamber/ cylinder Types: single action and double action revolvers Parts of a Handgun: a basic understanding of the parts of any gun is essential in forensic ballistics Rifles: lever actions rifles is a type of firearm action which uses a lever located around the trigger guard area, often including the trigger guard itself to load fresh cartridges into the chamber of the barrel when the lever is worked 

Lowering and raising the lever chambers a fresh round in the rifle

The Shotgun Barrel: unlike rifled firearms, shotguns have a smooth barrel   

They fire small lead balls or pellets contained within a shotgun shell The diameter of a shotgun barrel is expressed in terms gauge The higher the gauge number the smaller the barrels diameter

Marks on fired cartridges: class/ individual characteristics Firing pin, breechblock, extractors/ ejectors, magazines...
