Loss is a normal response of aging such as loss of a spouse, loss of independence, and loss of mobility. Whereas grief is how the person responds to the loss of a certain person, object, or ability. 2. What are the different types of grief? What are some behaviors typical of each type of grief? What

factors affect an individual’s response to loss? What is “ineffective coping?” Acute grief usually lasts less than a month and the individual may cry or become depressed, it is a functional disruption. Chronic and complicated grief consists of irrational anger, insomnia, MDD, and episodes of manic like episodes. Disenfranchised grief is when the individual is not able to openly grief due to it not being supported. Anticipatory grief is where an individual may show premature detachment from an individual who is dying or dying prematurely detach from the environment.

What are the 6 needs of the dying (the 6 Cs) and appropriate interventions for each need? Care: adequate treatment of pain, empathetic listening, advocating Control: based on the individual’s preferences, help patient regain control Composure: nurse uses coping techniques Communication: Nurse makes sure patient can communicate their needs Closure: Provide patients with time and privacy for self reflection and allow patients to talk about their feelings Continuity: Nurse works with patient to remain engaged in activities.
