CHAPTER 1: THE AURAL REALM: Sound, Silence, Muisc, and Noise

The inside mechanism of an upright piano - it's hitch pins, string dampers, and hammers. ACTIVITY: Let us listen to two music clips that we will be played in class.

CD Track 1: [ Tine Cintagion ] CD Track 2: [ Baleleng (The Mermaid's Song), are, for piano & orchestra - Alejandro Consolacion ] ANALYSIS: 1. As you listen Track #1, What did you hear? Describe. 

For me the first thing that I heared is like something a slowmotion drop of a water or like in the hostipal the monitor but in 2 seconds the tone was change into like a ring or alarm and it's like something being rotated in a slow way but the sound is loud, until the sound I heared fades faster and faster and you could conclude that an echo in the end.

2. Next, describe what you heard from Track #2. 

For me that music has something to do with someone important to himself or herself because the music makes you feel the message it contains and the way piano and violin are played and the way even if the song is old when you headed nor play it you'll feel the loneliness and sadness and also reminiscing those past event that you have encountered.

3. Compare what you heard between the two tracks. Are there any similarities ? What are the difference ? 

Yes. For me Track #1 and Track #2 are similar because you can hear the sound and noise in those two tracks and you will know the songs indicates something message, and the difference is the way to play a track is different and instruments that used to make a sound is totally different.

4. List down 3-5 words that you may associate with you heard from Track #1. The words may be anything: nouns, names of places , adjectives, feelings, abstract ideas, or verbs. There is no wrong answer, as long as you can explain sensibly/artistically why you chose those words to describe what you heard from the first track.   

Hospital Patients or Doctors Dizzy

 

Alarm Wave Lenghts

5. Following the same idea from number 4, list down 3-5 words that you may associate with what you heard from Track #2. Elaborate why you chose those words.   

Whistle Tap sound Rhythm

 

Vibrations Opera or Threatre

The sound and silence heard by using a stethoscope on a patient help doctors diagnose and treat certain illness.

ACTIVITY: CRITICAL THINKING After reading the definitions stated above, let us give more careful thoughts to these concepts and take our understanding of these concepts one step higher, by pondering and answering these questions: 1. Can silence be considered to be a kind of music? How ? 

Yes, because silence in music allows us as musicians to distinguish between different periods of sound, and gives more meaning to rhythms, dynamics, melodies and just music in general.

2. It is possible that some types of music may be considered as noise? Explaine. 

Yes, although both noise and music are mixtures of sound waves at different frequencies, muisc is considered to be ordered sound, while noise is disordered sound. The further we delve into displeasing or dissonant music, the more likely it is to be perceived as noise.

3. Reflect on the saying " the silence is deafening". Can silence be considered as a sound? Can silence be considered as a noise? 

A silence or a lack of response, such as due to approval or lack of any enthusiasm. The suggestion that they work through the holidays met with deafening silence. And silence is not other than sound, not separate from sound;bit isnjot opposite of noise. Silence is a kind of sound.

4. Listen to Track #3. Can this be considered as muaic, or a noise? Explain and defend your answer. CD Track #3: [ " Tipang Bulag-bulagan" - A. Roldan ] 

If for others track #3 is a noise because of the way it is played and it may be a music because it is a composition compose by A. Roldan and I can compare it to Beethoven 5th Symphony compose by Ludwig van Beethoven, because at first you will think that it is similar and familiar to track #3. It can be kaso used in horror for background music.

ASSESSMENT: Let us answer the following questions: 1. What is audible range? 

It is the spectrum of sound is wide - the human ear can only hear a certain range from this spectrum and has two range factors: the volume and the pitch

2. In what units of measurement is pitch measure? How about volume ?  

Pitch - refers to how high or low in a particular sound is, and is measured in hertz (Hz). The average hearing range for humans begins at 20 Hz and tops out of aroun 20,000 Hz. Volume - refers to the loudness or softness of a sound, and us measured in decibles (dB). Sounds more than 80 to 90 decibles may be dangerous to human ears when exposed for long durations

3. Define and Explain the term of "white noise". 

Also called white sound, a steady, unvarying, unobtrusive soun as an electronically produced drone for the sound of rain, used to mask or obliterate unwanted sounds. Physics, random noise with a uniform frequency spectrum over a wide range of frequencies.

Example : whirring fan, radio or television static, hissing radiator 4. Define and Explain the term of "music of the spheres "  

An ethereal harmony thought by the Pythagorean to be produced by the vibrations of the celestial spheres. The musical universalist ( literally universal music ), also called music of the speheres or harmony of the spheres, is a philosophical concept that regards proportions in the movement of celestial bodies - the Sun, Moon, and Planets - as a form of music.

LESSON 2 : HEAR ME OUT: OF VOICES AND HARMONIES

ACTIVITY: LISTENING Let us listen to a simple piece of noise. [ Track #4: " Pen-pen de Sarapen" ] ANALYSIS: After listening to the track above, let us answer the following questions: 1. Describe the melody of "Pen-pen de Sarapen". Listen to the intervals between the pitches. Does it generally move in steps or in leaps? 

Yes, there is an interval of sounds as we sung pen pen de sarapen. It moves into steps and the pitch changes slightly.

2. Listen to the harmony (combination of sounds) in the piece. Foes it sound pleasing or does it irritate you. How does it make you feel? 

The harmony has a pleasing sound and makes me feel nostalgic. It sounds pleasing because it has a rhyme that gives good harmony. It makes me feel nostalgic because the song is played with a game during my childhood days until now. Others might find it irritating, but for me it is a good song that brings the Filipino culture.

3. Take the note of the range of the melody. Is it narrow or wide? 

The range of a melody is the space it occupied within the spectrum of pitches the human ear can perceived. In the song pen pen de sarapen. The melody range is narrow for it doesn't changes it's tone from the beginning. The rhythm and tone is consistent until it reaches the end. It doesn't have a great distance from highest to lowest pitches.

4. Does the music changes from soft to loud (dynamics) or does it remain the same? 

No, there is no changes in the dynamic of the song pen pen de sarapen

5. What personal experience from your childhood can you associate with this song? 

I used to play a game with this song pen pen de sarapen and to play this, one must holds out his or her palm and sings the rhyme while the other repeatedly touches and removes the tip of his or her forefinger to and from the palm for each syllable. The singer leaves his or her palm open until he or she reaches the end of the song where it is time to close his hand and catch the other's finger. The person whose finger is caught can be deemed "It," which designates him or her as the one to hold out the palm for the next round." We had a good times everytime we play this and it makes me remember

my childhood days where all of my friends are happy singing this song and to whom the song stopped , he/she is the one called as "taya". ACTIVITY: LISTENING Let us listen to sample music: [ Track #5: Intervals ] ( No Question ) ACTIVITY: LISTENING Let us listen to sample music : [ Track #6: Fragments from Beethoven's Symphony No.5 in C minor , op.67 ]. ( No questions ) ACTIVITY: LISTENING Let us listen to sample : [ Track #7: Consonant & Dissonant Tones ] ANALYSIS: 1. Based on what we heard, which sounds are Consonant (sound pleasing)? Which are Dissonant (clash)?    

Clair De Lune (dissonant, regular, fast, homophonic, voice) Pierot Lunaire (dissonant, irregular, moderate, monophonic, voice and instrument) Poeme Electronique (consonance, irregular, fast, polyphonic, voice) Concert for prepared piano and orchestra (dissonant, regular and irregular, moderate, polyphonic, instrument)

ACTIVITY: LISTENING Let us listen to some sample chords and scales . [ Track #8: MajorbChords & Scales ] & [ Track #9: Minor Chords & Scales ]. ANALYSIS: Listen to both Tracks 8 and 9, which type of triad or chord sound "happy"? Which chord sound "sad"? 

There’s a common assumption about music that major is HAPPY and minor is SAD. Major and Minor are Objective. ‘Happy’ and ‘Sad’ are Subjective.

         

Examples of ‘Sad’ Songs in Major Keys Plain White T’s: Hey There Delilah REM: Everybody Hurts Sinead O’Connor: Nothing Compares to You Adele: Someone Like You The Everly Brothers: Love Hurts Taps Examples of ‘Happy’ Songs in Minor Keys Pharrell Williams: Happy Sound of Music: My Favorite Things Abba: Money, Money, Money Peggy Lee: Fever

APPLICATION and ASSESSTMENT: Compose a short motive about something. It mag be about a place, a thing, an idea, a pet etc. Instruments or electronic devices may be used, as necessary. Give a short explanation/background about it. 

I choose this instrumental background to represent my life. Whenever I'm sad, weary and feel alone. I used to play this type of music for it fades all my sorrowness, it gives me the courage to stand again and fought back that whatever the circumstances may come. I will never fall because God gave me strength to surpass any challeges waiting for me. Anyway this music is somewhatva religious song.

LESSON 3: Hearing Your Heartbeat Makes me Blush: Rhythm and Timbre ACTIVITY: LISTENING Listen to sample music. [ Track #12: Piano Piece in Eb - A. Roldan ]

ANALYSIS: 1. Based on what you heard give description about he speed and the mood of the piece using your own words. 

The track no. 12 piano piece Eb by Alberto Roldan perceive vibratory cues of piano mediated by spectral and spatial summations. The mood changes as the pitch and tone changes. As a listener, I sway to the music when it speeds up and makes my heart beat faster as it goes fast as well.

2. If these piece were to be background music for a fin, what would be the scene that comes to your mind? 

If I would given a chance to use this as a background music to a certin film, then I would choose a film related to musical theatre like phantom opera or the greatest showman. This fits perfectly to this kind of genre since it beats faster and possess excitement and happy mood.

3. If this piece were to be used as background for a TV advertisement, what products would it be used for? Why would it be effective? 

For me it would fit in Clothing Brand or for commercial because the way it played the piano is likely you imagine that you are in a things that fit in .

LESSON 4: Functionality or Fashion? : Form and Styles ACTIVITY: BRAINSTORMING / ELICITING RESPONSES Here is the sample list of some styles of music. Use your own words about ideas/ people/ things/ places/ events that you associate which each style given.

1. Classical music - classical music is noted for its development of highly sophisticated instrumental musical forms, like the concerto, symphony and sonata. For me, it has a lighter, clearer texture and is less complex. It is mainly homophonic melody above chordal accompaniment. 2. Popular Music- music with wide appeal that is typically distributed to large audiences through the music industry. These forms and styles can be enjoyed and performed by people with little or no musical training. It stands in contrast to both art music and traditional or "folk" music. 3. Country music- it has a style and genre of largely string-accompanied American popular music. Country songs has a straightforward chord structures that are lifted by great vocal harmonies, and extremely strong choruses. 4. Electronic music- Electronic music is a blanket term used to describe music that generally is made using electronic instruments (such as drum machines or synthesizers) or uses electronic equipment to make music (cuts or pitch shifting) and is typically not organic-sounding. 5. Jazz- broad style of music characterized by complex harmony, syncopated rhythms, and a heavy emphasis on improvisation. The musical form evolved to embrace popular music standards, modal music, pop, rock, funk, and even true avant-garde compositions 6. Ethnic music- it can be popular, classical, traditional and religious, and they are usually not sung in English. In a nation of many cultures, ethnic songs and music includes songs from nearly every cultural and language group in the world. Here in the Philippines there are a lot of ethnic songs different ethnic places. 7. Hip-hop- is urban culture or fashion associated with hip-hop music. Hip-hop is defined as a type of music that is influenced by rap and funk, often including melody and rhythm of previously recorded songs 8. Musical theatre- this includes theatrical performance that combines songs, spoken dialogue, acting and dance. The story and emotional content of a musical humor, pathos, love, anger are communicated through words, music, movement and technical aspects of the entertainment as an integrated whole. I had this experienced in performing musical theatre of les miserables during my highschool days ACTIVITY: TERNARY FORMS Let us listen to a sample music. [ Track #16: "Sa Libis ng Nayon" Santiago S. Suarez ] - This is an instrumental rendition of a Philippines art song. It is ternary form (A-B-A).

( No question )

APPLICATION AND ASSESSTMENT: Imagine you were a film scorer. Yoy are commissioned to create background music for a particular film. Find a story book/novel that has not yet been adapted to film. Use the style/genre of music you want to create its background and explain in virtually why you choose it. What form would you use? Ternary or binary? Record your output and present it to your teacher. 

Through the times of being sad in life the lyrics “but feeling lonely don’t mean you’re alone” truly leave an impact. The song describes the feeling of being lost; however, there is always someone at the end choosing us and rooting for us. And it is God as based on the comics strip I have provided. It pertains that life is like a pencil you need eraser to remove past and a guidance to direct us in a right path. Moreover, the feeling of comfort in yhe song is provided by the classic duo of guitar and piano, and the gradual buildup of instrumental music.

LESSON 5: NO MUSIC, NO LIFE! : Its Value and Roles in Society ACTIVITY: GETTING TO KNOW YOU BETTER

ANALYSIS: Ask your partner these questions for the above mentioned activity: 1. Do you like music? 

Yes, I like music because it keeps me calm and cool. It makes me happy. I listened to music to manage my moods, to enhance a workout, to bond with other people and as a distraction from daily life. Listening to music, can provide health benefits to those suffering from certain condition. It reveals my inner me and my voice as I listen to music.

2. Do you sing or play a musical instrument? Are you part of any musical group? 

Yes I do love music a lot and I can tell you that my talent is singing. I can play ukulele, xylophone and guitar and all of this came from way back when I was grade 9. This is the time where I started to play an instrument. In fact I'd become part of musical group in our workshop and performed musical theatre as well. I do sing a song at church and part of a choir group. Everything I can put lean on is through music which changes me.

3. What is your favorite style/genre? 

Pop because they have a good rhythm, a catchy melody and are easy to remember and sing along to. They usually have chorus that's repeated several times and two or more verses. Most pop songs are between two and five minutes long, and the lyrics are usually about the joy and problems of love and relationships.

4. How do you use music in everyday situation? 

Practically and especially we are facing this covid 19 being alone for a minute or an hour can be considered as routinary behaviour for a day. Through playing music, it can bring us so many imagination and emotions. Music brings so much importance in our life especially the youth and gives us a peace of mind whenever we carry something heavy in our side.

5. How do you percieve musicians in general? 

There is much interest in the idea that musicians perform better than non-musicians in understanding speech in background noise. Some research in this area has often used energetic maskers, which have their effects primarily at the auditory periphery. However, making interference can also occur at more central auditory levels, known as informational masking.

6. Give me an instance in your life where music has greatly helped or affected you. 

Everytime I felt down and weary or if I can't sleep at night peacefully I only listened to instrumental religious song for it feels serenity. It am at ease whenever I hear these songs and it gives me the courage to fight back and never be afraid.

7. How can the music that you listen to or perform define you as a person ? 

Music can also make you a stronger individual. Listening to music everyday can be linked to our personality. For example, it can be make us a cheerful person if we listen to pop music, it can make us a creative person if we listen to classical music listening to indie music can show you are introvert person .
