Chapter 7. Understanding Theory and Research Frameworks Chapter 7. Review Questions Please answer to each question after you read the textbook contents in Chapter 7, and PPT file & related material posted on Bb. Submission is due by Sunday, 11:59 PM. 1. Explain the difference between framework & theory based on their characteristics (at least 3). Major differences between frameworks and theories exist. A framework is an explanation of theory that are to be tested in a study. A theory is going to be more abstract rather than concrete and focuses on more generalized information. The framework is more implicit. A framework focuses more on the theory or idea of the study being researched.

2. State the characteristics of “Concepts” as an element of theory (Do not just cut & paste from PPT). A few characteristics of concepts of elements of theory are that they abstract in describing ideas, in order to separate them from other concepts to give it its own identity. A theorist needs to define each concept in theory. Can either be vague or detailed. 3. Explain what is Relational statement (proposition) and state the difference between general and specific proposition. Is a statement that is abstract in defining the relationship amongst concepts. There are two types: general and specific proposition. General is more abstract statements in nursing. A specific proposition is more concrete and testable in middle range or practice theories.

4. State the levels of Theoretical Thinking from the least abstract to the most abstract level. There are different levels of theoretical thinking that range from least to the most abstract. Going from least to most is: practice theories, middle range theories, grand nursing theories, conceptual framework.

5. State characteristics of frameworks used in “Middle-range Theories” Frameworks include limited scope, limited number of concepts, limited aspects of relationships, empirically testable, and are consolidated in wide theories. These types of theories are the least abstract and most narrow. They come from ground theory studies and deducted from grand nursing theory. These studies used to build EBP. Examples include Swanson’s caring theory, Ruland and Moore’s peaceful end of life, and Tsai’s Caregiver Stress.

6. Visit http://nursing-theory.org/ Then, chose one nursing theorist you like most & “briefly” explain why. I chose Florence nightingale because she was the pioneer of nursing. Her amazing work with soldiers eventually led her to become the lady with the lamp due to her rounds at night. She eventually also wrote the Notes on Nursing book which led to the foundation of many nursing schools and their programs in nursing. She was evolutionary and without her nursing would not be where it is at today. 7. Explain Grand Nursing theory and state 2-3 examples of population and study sample, and the relationship between population and sample. Grand nursing theory is abstract and a broad type of theory that covers nursing actions and the responses by patients. Initially developed in 1970, they were developed by grand nursing theorist. Examples of these include Roy’s adaptation model, King’s theory of goal attachment, and Orem’s theory of self-care.

8. Explain Middle-range theory and state 2-3 examples of it. These types of theories are the least abstract and most narrow. They come from ground theory studies and deducted from grand nursing theory. These studies used to build EBP. Examples include Swanson’s caring theory, Ruland and Moore’s peaceful end of life, and Tsai’s Caregiver Stress

9. Explain Situation-specific theory and state 2-3 examples of it. Is a more specific type of theory than middle range which means it is less abstract. Usually lengthy titles that include specific situations. Examples of these theories include Midlife women’s attitudes towards physical activity, and Bennamen’s crisis emergencies for individuals with sever, persistent mental illnesses.

10. State what questions do you want to ask when you critically appraise a research framework. (at least 5) Are the findings consistent with those proposed by the framework? Is the methodology being used adequate to test the hypothesis? Are the findings consistent with other studies being used in the same framework? What are the concepts of the framework? Are the study findings being linked back to the frameowork?...
