Chapter 7. Understanding Theory and Research Frameworks Chapter 7. Review Questions 1. Explain the difference between framework & theory based on their characteristics (at least 3).  Frameworks are a “brief explanation” of a theory or portions of a theory to be tested in a study. A framework reflects the researcher’s theory or idea about the study. The framework may be implicit and a theory is more abstract than concrete; a theory focuses on the general aspects. 2. State the characteristics of “Concepts” as an element of theory (Do not just cut & paste from PPT).  “Concepts” as an element of theory are the “basic element” of a theory, they abstractly describe and name an object, idea, or phenomena, thus allowing it to have a separate identity or sense of meaning. Every concept in a theory must be defined by the theorist who formulated the concept; they must be detailed/complete or it be vague and need further development. A conceptual definition is a definition developed by the theorists and this definition is different than the dictionary definition of the concept at hand. 3. Explain what is Relational statement (proposition) and state the difference between general and specific proposition.  The proposition is an abstract statement that further clarifies the type of relationship that exists between or among concepts. The difference between the general proposition and the specific proposition is that the general proposition is more abstract relational statement in “Grand Nursing Theories” and the specific proposition is more concrete and testable relational statement in the Middle range or Practice theories. 4. State the levels of Theoretical Thinking from the least abstract to the most abstract level.  Practice Theories  Middle-Range Theories  Grand Nursing Theories – most abstract “nursing specific” theories  Conceptual Framework – Most abstract (general) theories 5. State characteristics of frameworks used in “Middle-range Theories”  Some characteristics of frameworks used in Middle Range Theories are the limited scope, particular substantive force, they contain a limited number of concepts and they focus on a limited aspect of the relationship, it is also empirically testable. 6. Visit http://nursing-theory.org/ Then, chose one nursing theorist you like most & “briefly” explain why.  I went ahead and I chose Helen C. Erickson as my most-liked nursing theorist, because her Modeling and Role-modeling Theory of Nursing draws on concepts from Piaget’s Theory of Cognitive Development, Maslow’s Theory, Erikson’s theory, and Selye and Lazarus’s General Adaption Syndrome. I like that she drew

from each of these theorists, because her theory helps nurses care of their patient’s by recognizing everyone’s uniqueness and focusing on the individual patient’s needs. 7. Explain Grand Nursing theory and state 2-3 examples of population and study sample, and the relationship between population and sample.  The Grand Nursing Theory is an abstract, broad-scope theory that encompasses Nursing action and patient response in multiple settings. Initial grand theories were developed by nursing scholars in the 1970s. Those grand theories are usually developed by nursing theorists. 8. Explain Middle-range theory and state 2-3 examples of it.  The Middle-range Theories is less abstract and narrower in scope than grand nursing theories or conceptual models, they emerge from the ground theory study, to be deducted from a grand nursing theory, and systemic review of studies to build EBP related to clinical problem areas. Some examples of the theory are Swanson’s Caring theory, Ruland and Moore’s Peaceful End of Life, and Tsai’s Caregiver Stress Adaptational Model. 9. Explain Situation-specific theory and state 2-3 examples of it.  Practice theories (also called Situation-specific) are more specific theories than middle-range theories (least abstract). The title of those theories are usually lengthy to include the specific situations. These theories directs specific nursing interventions, and practice theory research develops into EBPs. Two examples of it are Im’s Midlife Women’s Attitudes toward Physical Activity and Bennamen’s Crisis Emergencies for Individuals with Severe, persistent mental illness. 10. State what questions do you want to ask when you critically appraise a research framework. (at least 5)  Are the concepts linked with variables that are measured? 

Are the findings for each hypothesis consistent with those proposed by the framework?

Are the findings consistent with those of other studies using the same framework?

Do the hypotheses, research questions, or objectives emerge from the framework propositions?

Are the hypotheses, research questions, or objectives tested statistically??...
