Description

Questions 1. How does Jack respond when Ralph calls his hunters “boys armed with sticks”? Jack is furious that Ralph insulted his and his hunters' capability and he runs off, blowing the conch to call a meeting. 2. What does Jack do when the boys don’t respond to his demand to be chief? Enraged, Jack storms away from the group, saying that he is leaving and that anyone who likes is welcome to join him. 3. Why does Simon suggest they go back to the mountain? Simon suggests that they all return to the mountain to search for the beast. 4. What does Piggy suggest they do, since they can’t return to the mountain to build a fire? Piggy suggests they build a new signal fire, on the beach rather than on the mountain. 5. What happens to most of the biguns while Ralph and Piggy are busy? While Ralph builds the fire, the biguns leave the group to go and join Jack’s tribe. 6. The hunters receive a new name in this chapter. What is it? “Savages” - describes the appearance of the hunters (their painted faces) and the way they act when they go hunting. 7. What gift does Jack offer to help pacify the Beast? The head of the pig they hunted. Jack thinks the beast won’t go after them if they sacrifice the pig head to the beast. He nailed the pig’s head on a stick and left it in the jungle. 8. What does Jack ask Roger to do to a stick? He tells him to take a stick and sharpen them on both sides. He uses the stick as a stake and puts the pig head on it. Memorable Quotations “The head is for the beast. It's a gift.” The boys are sacrificing pig heads to a beast. In reality, they are sacrificing pigs to satisfy their own lust for blood. “The forest near them burst into uproar. Demoniac figures with faces of white and red and green rushed out howling…stark naked save for the paint and a belt was Jack” Jack and the hunters have become the embodiment of evil. They attack Ralph and Piggy in an effort to usurp power. “I'm warning you. I'm going to get angry. D'you see? You're not wanted. Understand? We are going to have fun on this island! So don't try it on, my poor misguided boy, or else– “

Simon is having a conversation with a pig's head on a stick. The importance of this quote, however, goes beyond that of a boy losing his mind. Simon represents everything that is good. The Lord of the Flies (the pig's head) represents all that is evil. The two cannot coexist. “The silence continued, breathless and heavy and full of shame. Slowly the red drained from Jack's cheeks, then came back with a painful rush. He licked his lips and turned his head at an angle, so that his gaze avoided the embarrassment of linking with another's eye.” (139) “Boys armed with sticks” (137) - Ralph dismisses Jack’s hunters, something he cares about. This makes Jack angry and is probably one of the reasons why he storms off and creates his own tribe....
