CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION Background of the Study It is worth examining the roles dance plays for both people and societies. As a potent artistic expression, dance is found in every known society to function in some important ways. It constitutes one of the oldest and most important means of expressions developed by humans. Goquingco (1980, p.13) regards it significantly when she says, "Show me how you dance, and I'll tell you who you are." She adds that the proper study of a people's dances entails a study of their antecedents, ways, beliefs, legends, and rituals. And in order to gain greater insight into a multifaceted dance culture, one must first get to know the historical, socio-religious, and cultural background of the people. In his study, Reginales (2005) emphasizes that dance indeed is an art, more than art it is life, an outburst of feelings and emotions where one's mind, body and soul dwell into one through movements, and an experience in life that is arrested, presented and interpreted to be relived in another time and in another occasion. He also points out that dancing as such is a form of survival as much as it is spiritual and social expression. In the Philippines, dance has always been an integral part of the Philippine culture. It has made a dramatic progress and contribution on our quest for a common identity as a people. Our diverse and rich dance heritage has been very instrumental in providing avenues where we can express our emotions and ideas.
