RESEARCH DESIGN & METHODOLOGY

This chapter contains a discussion of the methodology that wasused in the conduct of this study. It describes and expounds the research method, research environment, research subjects, research instruments that were used and methods of data collection, sampling procedure & statistical treatment.

Research Method This study dealt with the factors affecting individual differences among selected residents in Princess Lawanen Hall Dormitory.The descriptive type of research method was used. It is a fact finding with sufficient interpretation. The meaning of data that was collected wasdescribed from the objective point of view.

Research Environment The locale of this study is in Mindanao State University, Main Campus which is located in Marawi City. The campus has an area of 1,000 hectares situated at about 2,800 feet above sea level overlooking the blue and tranquil water of Lake Lanao. Mindanao

State University (MSU) is one of the state universities of the Philippines, established in 1961 with the aim of being a premier supraregional university geared towards the agroindustrial, ecological, socio-economic and political development of Mindanao. It is located about four (4) kilometres from downtown Marawi, known as the “City of Golden Hospitality” and the “Islamic City of the South”. The Campus is accessible either by land and water transportation from all points of Mindanao. It is both an academic and residential campus where students’ dormitories and cottages are constructed. The study was conducted in Princess Lawanen Hall Dormitory. It is a girl dormitory with two wings, the North Wing and the South Wing. The dormitory is located 1.4 kilometres distance from the main entrance of the university.

Research Subjects The research subjects and respondents were the occupants of Princess Lawanen Hall (PLH) dormitory in Mindanao State University, Main, Marawi City at the time the study was conducted. In North Wing, there are total numbers of 292 occupants in 73 rooms. They were composed of students from the provinces and cities of Mindanao, Sulu, and Palawan distributed to different colleges. All respondents were female students of Mindanao State University, Marawi City.

Research Instrument The study used questionnaires as its research instrument because it gathers data faster than any method & it is most convenient among all other instruments. The questionnaire was composed of two major parts. The first part dealt with the personal profile of the respondents in terms of academic status, age, tribe, religion & civil status. While the second part dealt with thefactors affecting individual differences among selected residents in Princess Lawanen Hall Dormitory.

Data Collection Method The data relevant to the study was through primary source using survey questionnaire that was distributed directly to the respondents and aids with personal interviews for some issues not clear. Secondary data was taken from the books, & internet.

Sampling Procedure

There were two hundred ninety-two (292) registered occupants of Princess Lawanen Hall this first semester, 2013. All of them are female students of Mindanao State University, Marawi City. Majority (74) of them were the respondents of the study. In getting the sample size, the researcher usedthe Sloven’s formula as shown below. Sloven’s formula

26

n=N/ (1+ N(0.10)2)

Where:

N = total population

e = margin of error

N = 292 students

e = 0.10%

n=?

n= 292/ 1+292 (0.10)2

= 292/ 1+ 292 (0.01)

= 292/3.92

= 74.48 or 74

n=74 students

Weighted Mean: This was used to get the average responses of respondents in terms ofindividual differences. Formula: Weighted Mean (x) = ∑fixi/N Where:

fi = frequency

xi = weighted mean value where (1,

2, 3, 4) N = total no. of respondents 27
