Characters)in)Disgraced) ! • Amir Kapoor – 40, a corporate lawyer for acquisitions and mergers with the law firm Liebowitz, Bernstein and Harris, whose parents emigrated from Pakistan before he was born, living in New York city, Emily’s husband, Muslim upbringing but denies that religion, Hussein’s uncle • Emily Hughes-Kapoor – early 30s, a painter, white upper or upper middle-class upbringing, married to Amir, interested in Islamic culture, had a one-night stand with curator Isaac • Isaac – 40, Jewish, a curator at the Whitney Museum of Art, Jory’s husband, willing to present some of Emily’s art, having had an affair with Emily during a trip to London in Oct. • Jory Brathwaite – mid to late-30s, African American, looks masculine, a lawyer who is promoted to partner at the law firm, even though other lawyers (e.g. Amir) have put in more years of service to the firm • Hussein Malik aka “Abe Jensen” – Amir’s nephew from Pakistan who wants to help an Imam in prison and who gets into some trouble with the FBI • Tariq - a young man who is questioned by the FBI after making some comments at a coffee shop, a friend of Abe • Imam Fareed - a religious leader who is arrested for raising money for his mosque • Steven and Jack - partners in a law firm who promote one lawyer (Jory) to partner over another (Amir) • Mort - a lawyer and partner who is retiring from a law firm • Barista - calls the police when two men talk about terrorism in America • a waiter at a restaurant – makes racist remarks against Amir Or as theater stage directions put it: Characters Amir – of South Asian origin. A corporate lawyer at odds with his Muslim heritage. Emily’s husband. Emily – Caucasian. A painter whose work focuses on the spiritual roots of the Muslim faith. She strives to be even-handed and level-headed in both her personal and professional relationships. On the verge of a major breakthrough, she finds herself and her marriage increasingly threatened by her husband’s complicated relationship o his Islamic roots and faith. Isaac – Caucasian. Jewish. A successful art curator married to Jory. A vibrant and seductive personality, he draws people in with his charmingly quick wit, easy manner and passion. Jory – African American. Recently made partner in Amir’s firm. Married to Isaac. Very forthright and sharp. An articulate and confident woman who has wrestled her way to the top. Abe – Pakistani American. Amir’s nephew. As mainstream American as they come. Becoming somewhat of a young Muslim activist in his community. He is passionate, headstrong, and devout in his beliefs.
