Description

Mrs. Evans 7.01 Live Lesson Lab Template Endothermic and Exothermic Activity For this assignment, you will create your own potential energy diagrams for each of the three chemical reactions. Then you will analyze the data and your diagrams for each reaction.

Generic Reactions Synthesis

A + B → AB Single Replacement C + AB → CB + A Double Replacement AB + CD → AD + BC

To assist you, use the enthalpy values in the data chart for each generic reaction provided. Be sure to following the summary of steps below. · Illustrate the x- and y-axes to show the reaction pathway and potential energy, in kilojoules. Ensure your energy intervals are appropriate for the data. · Plot the enthalpy values of the reactants, products, and transition state using three horizontal dotted lines across the graph for each. ● Draw the energy curve from the reactants line to the transition state and curve the line back down to the energy of the products. Label the reactants, products, and transition state. ● Illustrate double-headed arrows to represent both the total change in enthalpy (ΔH) and the activation energy (Ea). ● Calculate the total change in enthalpy and the activation energy using the energy values provided for each reaction. Record those values below the graph.

Make sure correct units are included.

Was heat released or absorbed? How do you know? Released, because the products have a lower potential energy than reactants. Why is enthalpy change positive or negative? Negative because of the release in energy. How does your potential energy diagram help you identify endothermic and exothermic reactions? Negative slope meaning energy is released indicating an exothermic reaction.

Was heat released or absorbed? How do you know? Absorbed, because the products have a higher potential energy than the reactants. Why is enthalpy change positive or negative? Positive because of the absorption of energy. How does your potential energy diagram help you identify endothermic and exothermic reactions? Positive slope meaning that the energy is absorbed indicating an endothermic reaction.

Graph 1- In graph 1 we saw that the products were absorbed at a higher potential energy than reactants. Also it was positive because of absorption, and the positive slope indicates an endothermic reaction. Graph 2- In graph 2 we saw that the heat was released and that the products had a lower potential energy than the reactants. This graph has a negative slope so the reaction was exothermic. Graph 3- In graph 3 we saw that the heat was absorbed due to the products potential energy being higher than the reactants. Additionally, this graph had a positive slope indicating an endothermic reaction....
