Description

1.) Apply the dramatistic pentad to the typical nonverbal rhetoric of a friday night party on campus. Which of the five elements of the pentad would you stress to capture the meaning of that human drama? I think that the element that would fit synchronously would be “Scene” primarily because throughout campus parties many different things are going on at once. Some people are having fun and others are not, some are consuming alcoholic beverages and others are not. There are many different situations collectively. 2.) Despite the fact Burke is a rhetorical critic who describes himself as a “word man,” he’s convinced that the creation of language began the downfall of the human race. Why? Burke goes into dramatic detail when referring to human beings and language. Burke believed that human beings are in love with language. The introduction of language ultimately introduced human beings to the negative by allowing the option of negativity such as no, not, nothing, never, etc. 3.) Burke claims that all rhetoric ultimately expiates guilt through victimage. If he’s right, is it the guilt of the speaker, the listener, or the victim that is being purged? That’s a difficult question to answer and is dependant on the situation. I personally have been someone's “scapegoat” and it is unfair and very frustrating. I think that determining guilt through victimage is perspective based. So for example, I once was “in the middle” of a situation between two friends. One of my friends was just an acquaintance and the other was who I would refer to as my best friend. The acquaintance and I became close after we both decided to transfer to the same school and eventually our acquaintanceship evolved into a deep friendship. My best friend was close to the both of us and eventually began getting jealous, she would often make remarks about me and say things like “she never did this or that until she became your friend.” (referring to my friend changing because of me) Although it is unfair to say that I was the one that was guilty because I was the “scapegoat”, I can see how someone else may feel that my best friend was in the right because she was “left out” and “replaced”. The situation is perspective based.

4.) Burke says that without identification, there is no persuasion. A number of the theories already covered deal with ideas or principles akin to identification. Can you name five? I found it extremely difficult to vote for a president this last year, primarily because I felt as if I could not relate to any of the candidates. I am a hispanic woman who is educated and mother. The candidates were able to relate to one or two of the characteristics but they could not meet all in addition to my political views. Without the connection, it was difficult for the politicians to persuade me into choosing them. Five examples can be physical characteristics, experiences, personality, beliefs, and attitudes....
