Any absence after 2 unexcused absences (equivalent to1 week of classes) will result in your grade being lowered by one letter (e.g. A becomes A-). Students with 4 or more unexcused absences will fail the course automatically. If you miss a class meeting due to technical difficulties, it is your responsibility to watch the recording of the class meeting on Zoom to make up for the course material you miss. Certain exceptions may be made under extenuating circumstances at the discretion of the instructor. Participation: Class participation is a must. Please be prepared to ask and answer questions relating to class discussions on a voluntary and regular basis. You will earn a maximum of 1 participation point for each week when you raise your hand during lectures and are called upon to participate at least once a week. You will not earn any participation points if you are simply called upon to answer questions without volunteering. Tutoring: Throughout the course of this semester (preferably once per week for 10 weeks), you are expected to attend tutoring sessions on Zoom hosted by your TAs to practice Mandarin Chinese and/or get help with your course work. You will earn a maximum of 5% of the total semester grade by making ten 30-minute sessions. Each session is worth 0.5 point; if you stay longer than 30 minutes in one session, it still counts as one session, hence 0.5 point. It is your responsibility to bring the tutoring time sheet for the tutors to sign during your visits and keep it until the end of the semester to submit to the instructor. Quizzes: The instructor will dictate vocabulary during lectures via Blackboard Zoom Meeting. The student must upload a picture of the completed quiz on Blackboard in the allotted time. You will not be able to make up for the quiz if you are late or absent. Certain exceptions may be made under extenuating circumstances at the discretion of the instructor. At the end of the semester, 1 lowest grade for your quizzes will be dropped. Homework: Weekly homework must be submitted on Blackboard Assignments before 12:00 pm (EST) of the due date. Under no circumstances will late assignments be accepted. Certain exceptions may be made under extenuating circumstances at the discretion of the instructor. At the end of the semester, 1 lowest grade for your homework will be dropped.

Presentations: Presentations will be performed on Blackboard Zoom Meeting during recitations. No make-ups for missed presentations will be permitted except for extenuating circumstances at the discretion of the instructor. Tests: Unit tests will be made available on Blackboard Tests during test time. Answers to the tests must be uploaded onto the Blackboard Test Answers tab in the allotted time. No make-ups for missed tests will be granted except for extenuating circumstances at the discretion of the instructor. Final Exam: The final exam will take place during the regularly scheduled time on Blackboard Zoom Meeting. Extra credit: You may earn three extra credit points (3% in addition to your total semester grade) either by participating in and writing a brief report (at least100 Chinese characters) about a public China-related event on campus or reading one unit of the supplementary readings and write a summary-reaction essay about it. You may type your extra credit report but refrain from using online translation app to translate the whole report. Extra credit work should be handed in along with your regular homework immediately following the event. Only one extra credit homework will be accepted per week. Please number your extra credit report for easy record keeping. Differential learning: Since students' linguistic backgrounds vary greatly, please be prepared that the instructor may assign different learning tasks and assessments to different students. Cell phone: You must put away your cell phone during class (lecture and recitation) unless instructed otherwise. If you are found using your phone during lecture, you will lose the participation point for the week; if you are found to use a cel...
