Course Description Enhance your ability to communicate effectively in personal and professional settings. Learn more about your own communication style preferences. Acquire tools and techniques to build positive relationships and achieve favourable results interpersonally and in small and large groups. Practical strategies include effective ways of: giving and interpreting verbal and non-verbal messages, listening, giving and receiving feedback, leading meetings and giving presentations.
Course Learning Outcomes By completion of this course, successful students will be able to: • Explain the basic principles of communication • Identify a variety of communication styles including your own • Describe how effective listening can be used to solve problems and achieve goals • Apply verbal and written communication skills to send clear, congruent messages and persuade or influence others • Give and receive feedback constructively • Discuss how social media is impacting communication • Assess the influence that gender, culture and personality differences have on communication • Devise strategies to better manage conflict in interpersonal relationships • Plan, organize and deliver an effective oral presentation

Online Learning Your course will be delivered using Desire2Learn (D2L), the University of Calgary learning management system. Zoom will also be used to provide interactive experiences in a virtual classroom, to provide student groups an online meeting space. Your instructor may also use Zoom to evaluate student participation or course work. Recordings will not be used for any purposes other than teaching this online course. Workload Expectations This is a 40-hour course running over a period of 13 weeks. Expect to spend about 4-5 hours a week on course tasks.
Attendance Ungraded attendance (Online delivery): Your online attendance is strongly encouraged but not graded. It is to your benefit to attend all scheduled sessions/events so that you are best prepared to succeed on course assignments. Should you have a scheduled absence, please let your instructor know with as much notice as possible. The instructor will not review the information that you missed. It is strongly recommended that you find a “study buddy” who can catch you up on any missed content.

Late Assignments Extensions for assignments must be requested well in advance of their due date and will be granted at the sole discretion of the instructor.
