Child Abuse

Sophia Lampton Grand Canyon University SOC-220: Social Problems Linda Dutke August 2nd, 2021

While certain issues are apparent to the public, many others remain hidden away. The question of what a social problem is may be further elucidated with a brief description. A social problem, therefore, is anything that does damage to a person or to society (Sullivan, 2016). One of the major societal issues that impacts our adolescents is child abuse. Most of the time, these issues occur behind closed doors, and no one is aware of the abuse or of the children who are screaming for rescue. When the next-door neighbors hear the cries for assistance, no one comes to help. This is the situation until it is completed in public, with everyone's eyes and ears on you. Various factors contribute to child abuse, including the abuser's own childhood experiences, a poor day at employment or in their social relationships, or the child's undesired status as a burden. Child abuse, regardless of the cause, is seen as an issue in today's society. Following the application of sociological imagination to child abuse, a caregiver had a terrible day at work, getting shouted at by colleagues and being reported for poor productivity. After returning home, the caregiver is upset and furious about what occurred at work, and they see a task that the kid has neglected to do. They punish the kid by hitting him or her and taking out all of their wrath and fury on him or her. This is an example of how society may have an impact at home; the child's actions did not justify the maltreatment they experienced. The interactionist theoretical viewpoint would appear to be the one that perfectly illustrates child abuse. The reason why interactionists are effective in the treatment of child abuse is because there are two people involved: the abuser and the victim. The abuser may not consider what they are doing to be wrong; instead, they may view it as punishment and a convenient method of attempting to teach the kid something. However, the abusee believes that it is excessive or that it is not justified as discipline. Often, the abusee is unaware of what they have done wrong, and as a result, the act of abuse does not impart the lesson from the abuser that was

intended. It is possible that child abuse will have long-term consequences, in addition to the immediate harm that it does at the time it occurs. The theoretical viewpoint that provides the most comprehensive explanation of adolescent would-be interactionists. Since the beginning of time, there's been an issue with child abuse. Children were regarded to be the fathers under English common law, and when the colonists arrived in what is now recognized as the United States, individuals brought with them the same English common law that they had learned in England. It was not until 1870s that the public became fully aware of the presence of child abuse. Decades later, in 1974, a federal legislation was passed, the Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act, which was intended to aid in the elimination of child abuse in our country. However, child abuse continues to be a problem today. (Child Abuse: A Historical Overview and Overview 2018). In addition to the kid who is being abused, the family who may be too afraid to intervene and stop the violence also feels the effects of child abuse. If child abuse continues to exist, there may be little that can be done to prevent it from occurring in the future, as well. However, there are steps that may be done to put a halt to it for individuals. I ntensive therapy and rehabilitation to work through any issues in one's life so that they do not spill over onto the nation's young are also recommended. There are many things that might be done to help rescue the young, and this is just a partial list. Although America is regarded as the wealthiest nation in the planet, it is also known for having the worst rates of child abuse and death in the world. According to Ptchard, Williams, and Rosenorn (2019), America should be setting an example, but instead it is demonstrating to the rest of the world that a child's life is worthless.
