Thesis: The Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 decreased the total number of Chinese citizens and increased the resident alien population while, at the same time, the total population of the United States increased. Between 1880 and 1890 (the period that the Chinese Exclusion Act was the newest) the total Chinese population in the United States increased slightly, but the number of Chinese citizens decreased. A. The total Chinese population in the United States increased by less than 2 percent. a) The total population of the United States increased from 50,155,783 to 62,947,714 in just 10 years.

b) The total population of Chines in the US increased slightly, when in comparison to the total US population, from 105,465 to 107,488. B. The number of Chinese Citizens in the United States decreased significantly between 1880 and 1890. a) The number of Chinese Citizens dropped significantly in proportion to the total number of Chinese living in the United States and the total population for the United States. b) The number of Chinese citizens decreased by almost 4 thousand people while the total US population increased by 20 percent. c) The Exclusion Act denied the Chinese the option of becoming citizens through naturalization. Only those who were born on US soil or to US citizens were allowed citizenship. d) Given the statistics, many Chinese had their citizenship revoked. As the number of Chinese citizens in the US decreased, the number of resident Chinese “aliens” increased. A. The number of resident alien people in the US increased by about 5 percent in just 10 years (between 1880 and 1890). a) The resident alien population increased from 89,023 to 94,987. b) At the same time, the total count of Chinese citizens dropped significantly and continued to drop until around the 1920s where it increased back up to 18,532.
