Introduction Menthol is a chemical naturally obtained from peppermint or other mint oils. The physical state of menthol is a waxy, crystalline substance, clear or white in colour, solid at room temperature and melts at slightly above (43 °C). There are many uses of menthol like as local anesthetic, used to relieve minor throat irritation and as chiral auxiliary synthesis. It is also intensively used in pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, toothpastes, chewing gum and toiletries. Menthol is an alcohol and it is a secondary type of alcohol. Menthol is a saturated compound and its molecular formula is C 10H20O. Natural menthol exists as one pure stereoisomer. The possible stereoisomers are Menthol, Isomenthol, Neomenthol and Neoisomenthol. a) Draw a structural formula of the selected organic compound consisting more than two functional groups in its structure including hydroxyl group.

1

b) Classify the type of alcohol of the selected compound and justify your answer. ·

Menthol is a secondary alcohol.

·

The –OH group is attached to a carbon atom that contains two hydrogen atom

· Menthol consists of a primary alcohol functional group, with general structure ROH. ·

Secondary alcohol shows results in hydroxyl like menthol and hydrogen.

· Menthol contains alcohol which has the hydroxyl group connected to a secondary carbon atom. c) Illustrate a balance chemical equation to synthesize aldehyde/ketone from the selected organic compound

2

d) Write a stepwise mechanisms for reaction in (c) :

3

4

e)Suggest a chemical test to confirm the formation of aldehyde/ketone for reaction in (c): A chemical test that can be conducted is Brady’s test. The reagent that can be used is 2,4dinitrophenylhydrazine(Brady's reagent) to detect the menthone. Menthone added into the 2,4DNPH
