Description

Alden Force J Meredith Critical Information Literacy (SOS-110-OL012) Written Assignment 1 The “Course Withdrawals and Refunds” policy details the process through which students can request a withdrawal from Thomas Edison State University (TESU) as well as the refund policies for courses not completed. While it may seem straight forward, establishing a withdrawal and refund policy for a university as large as TESU is fairly complicated when you consider all of the variables (types of student, financial aid received (federal grants, student loans, scholarships)) as well as length of term, and when during the term the student begins the withdrawal process. The policy begins by stating all of the things you may do that are not considered a “Request for Withdrawal” which includes stopping payment on checks or debit cards, failing to complete assignments or tests, or simply telling your instructor or another staff member of TESU. The only withdrawal request accepted by the Office of the Registrar would be one submitted either in writing via mail or through email directly to the Registrar that details course information and personal information (name, student ID, etc.). It is important that this communication be postmarked or otherwise date stamped as the date the request is submitted will be your official withdrawal date. If you are not willing or otherwise unable to follow these guidelines your withdrawal will not be processed and any refund you may have been due will be forfeited. For students who are full-time and drop down to part-time (less than 10 credit hours) your tuition rate will be re-calculated at your new status which can also affect your financial aid.

2 Force If you are withdrawing from all courses in the current or upcoming semester you will receive a pro-rated refund calculated based on how far into the semester you progressed. Those who withdraw before the 14th day of the term will receive the largest refunds varying from 100 percent (prior to the start) to 50 percent (between the eighth and 14th day of the term). Students who decide to withdraw 15 days or more into the semester will be eligible for a refund of 25% if they have not yet reached day 21. Any withdrawals requested after the 21st day of the term will not be eligible for any refund. Graduate students enrolled in eight-week courses have differing refund policies. Students wishing to withdraw from eight-week courses will be eligible for a 100 percent refund prior to the start of the semester (as will all TESU students). Otherwise, students are granted a 50% refund if the withdrawal is requested prior to the 14th day of the semester, any requests submitted or received after the 14th day will not be eligible for a refund. This policy would be helpful for a student who may have taken on too much – for example, someone who works full time taking on a full load of classes. Depending on the progress they have made and how far along in the semester they are, they may choose to simply drop down to a part-time status and withdraw from one or two courses and receive a refund instead of being stretched to thin or performing poorly throughout the semester. Active duty military would also find this policy useful as it details the exceptions under which a student currently serving in the military can request a refund if they are deployed or receive emergency activation orders. The embedded rubric for this assignment was incredibly helpful in determining exactly what was expected of this paper and topic. Rubrics can be beneficial when you are starting out on an assignment with a short length and directives that have to be met. Explaining the course

3 Force withdrawal and refund policy could have easily taken two to three pages, TESU took over 1,300 words to do so. Boiling this policy down to a 1 ½ - 2-page document was certainly difficult but having referenced the rubric before I began writing or even reading the policy, I knew exactly what to look for and how I needed to craft the flow of my paper. The rubric offered clear objectives and guidelines for the assignment’s expectations. The only thing I feel the rubric is lacking is clear guidelines for style formatting (MLA, Chicago, etc.)....
