Post circumcision care of the newborn baby...
DIMENSIONS HEALTHCARE SYSTEM PRINCE GEORGE’S HOSPITAL CENTER PERINATAL SERVICES INSTRUCTIONS FOR CARE OF THE CIRCUMCISION
1.
After circumcision, the penis may be red and raw for a few days.
2.
Keep the area clean and dry.
3.
Wash the hands before and after changing baby’s diaper.
4.
At each diaper change, put A&D ointment on and around the head of the penis. This should be done for 48 hours after circumcision. The ointment keeps the penis from rubbing on the diaper.
5.
For the first 12 to 24 hours after circumcision, the baby may be a little fussy and not feed well. This is not unusual. A little extra cuddling and attention should help to calm him.
6.
A small amount of blood may be noticed on the diaper the first few hours after the circumcision. This is normal but the nursing staff would like to be notified so they can check the circumcision site.
7.
A yellow substance may appear and cover the head of the penis within 1 to 2 days after circumcision. This is normal and it is part of the healing process. Do not try to wash it off.
8.
Be sure to notify the nursing staff or your pediatrician if the infant does not urinate in 24 hours....
