B.F. Skinner's operant conditioning assignment...

Description

Classical or Operant Assignment - Georgia Coburn Section 1: Analysis of Provided Scenarios

Scenario #1: Operant Conditioning 1. If a bright light is turned on a rat, then it will press a lever to turn it off. 2. Negative reinforcement applies to this scenario because the rat’s response/behaviour removes the stimulus (the bright light). 3. Consequence

Appetitive

Aversive

Given

Positive Reinforcement

Positive Punishment

Taken Away

Negative Punishment

Negative reinforcement The rat’s response to the light (pushing lever) took away the aversive stimulus.

Scenario #2: Classical Conditioning 1. If a mother strokes her baby, then the baby will show pleasure responses. 2. Definitions: 1. Unconditioned Stimulus - Stroking infant 2. Neutral Stimulus - Mother 3. Unconditioned Response - Pleasure (from infant) 4. Conditioned Stimulus - Sight of mother 5. Conditioned Response - Pleasure (from infant) 3. Before Conditioning

During Conditioning

After Conditioning

The mother (neutral stimulus) strokes her babies arm (unconditioned stimulus) causing the baby to respond with pleasure (unconditioned response).

The mother (neutral stimulus) repeats process of stroking her baby (unconditioned stimulus) and the baby still responds with pleasure (unconditioned response).

The infant sees it’s mother (neutral stimulus) and the baby responds with pleasure (conditioned response) before even being stroked by it’s mother (conditioned stimulus).

Scenario #3: Classical Conditioning 1. If Johnny slams the door, then the mother will flinch. 2. Definitions: 1. Unconditioned Stimulus - Door slamming 2. Neutral Stimulus - “Bye, Mom” 3. Unconditioned Response - Mother flinching 4. Conditioned Stimulus - Son yelling “Bye, Mom” 5. Conditioned Response - Mother flinching 3. Before Conditioning

During Conditioning

Johnny yells “Bye, Mom” (neutral Johnny continues to leave the stimulus) before leaving for house everyday bye yelling “Bye, school and slams the door Mom” (neutral stimulus) and (unconditioned stimulus) on his slamming the door way out, causing his mother to (unconditioned stimulus) on his flinch (unconditioned response). way out, making his mother flinch (unconditioned response) immediately after hearing the door slam.

After Conditioning Johnny’s mother hears him yell “Bye, Mom” (conditioned stimulus) and she flinches (conditioned response) before Johnny even slams the door.

Scenario #4: Operant Conditioning 1. If the wife complains about her heart condition, then the husband will become more attentive and comforting. 2. Positive reinforcement because she is trying to increase the response (husband comforting her) by presenting the stimulus (complaint of having heart pain by wife). 3. Consequence

Appetitive

Aversive

Given

Positive Reinforcement

Positive Punishment

Husband is giving the pleasant stimulus (attention) to his wife when she complains Taken Away

Negative Punishment

Negative reinforcement

Section 2: Creation of Original Scenario WITH Analysis Scenario: Brandon shoots Todd in the arm with a Nerf gun immediately after pushing a buzzer. When Todd is hit, he flinches. After many days of this routine, Todd begins to flinch as soon as he hears the sound of the buzzer before even being shot at. ****Scenario is Classical Conditioning**** 1. If a Nerf gun bullet hits Todd in the arm, then it will cause him to flinch. 2. Definitions: 1. Unconditioned Stimulus - Nerf gun shot 2. Neutral Stimulus - Buzzer 3. Unconditioned Response - Todd flinching 4. Conditioned Stimulus - Sound of the buzzer 5. Conditioned Response - Todd flinching 3. Before Conditioning

During Conditioning

After Conditioning

Brandon presses a buzzer button (neutral stimulus) and shoots Todd with a Nerf gun (unconditioned stimulus) causing Todd to flinch right after (unconditioned response

Brandon repeats process of pressing the buzzer (neutral stimulus) and shoots Todd with a Nerf gun (unconditioned stimulus) immediately after, making Todd flinch (unconditioned response)

Brandon presses the buzzer (conditioned stimulus) but does not follow the noise with a Nerf gun shot (unconditioned stimulus) however, Todd still flinches (conditioned response) even though nothing hit him....
