Description

CLASSIFICATION OF TRAINING In his book Transfer of Training in Sports, Dr Antoly Bondarchuk, a highly-regarded athletics coach, proposed a model to classify training "means" (in Eastern literature training means are synonymous with exercises or training tools / methods) in order to organise training with respect to specificity (dynamic correspondence or transfer of training) and periodisation. These categorisations are: Method Competitive Exercises (CE) Specific Development Exercises (SDE) Specific Preparatory Exercises (SPE)

General Preparatory Exercises (GPE)

Description Exercises that are identical or almost identical to competition event Exercise that repeat the competitive event in training but in its separate parts Exercises that do not imitate the competitive event, but train the major muscle groups and physiological systems Exercises that do not imitate the competitive event and do not train the specific systems.

UK Athletics Exercise Classification Hierarchy An application of Bondarchuk's model can be found within UK athletics, who have published their approach to organising training online (see BB for a link to their information). An example of how UKA have done this is as follows: Exercises are categorised with respect to specificity using Bondarchuk's definitions:

This system is then used to categorise training methods for various events:

In the UKA model, physical preparation includes activities that cross both SPE and GPE classifications; with long-term development, using their model, SPE and GPE forms the basis

of training. With less experienced and young athletes, GPE are typically receives the most attention; levels of SPE increases as the athlete develops. UKA GPE Activities        

Mobility Stability Flexibility Balance Muscle Recruitment Work Movement Pattern Development General jump & throw development General Strength Work

UKA SPE Activities   

Maximal Strength Activities: o Squat, Bench Press, Deadlift & Inverted Leg Press Power Activities: o Olympic lifting, throwing (MB’s or Powerbags) and jumping Elastic Development activities o Multiple jumps/bounds
