If you don't know much about this holiday, do a quick Internet search to help you learn more. One, way I can relate to this holiday is that every year before my grandma got put into the nursing home, we would have a fourth of July cookout. We would try to get all the family there immediate and extended family were invited it was just a matter of who would show up. Secondly, when I was about 8 years old, I went to Disney World with my aunt and saw the fireworks show. Third, I always made my mom her favorite dinner and would make a cake. Preview: Historical Context of Essays What can the essay's publication date (1981) tell you about the essay's message and purpose? The publication date can tell you what time and era the essay takes place. It can help tell you about the culture and message behind the essay. Connect to the Reading: Connecting to the Issue List personal connections or associations you have with Washington, D.C. Washington, D.C. is the capital of my country where I live. List personal observations or experiences you've had with racism. I have seen people get bullied for having a different color of skin. It is also when someone says a racial slur because that's how things used to be in American. People owned other people and told them what they could and couldn't do. Make Predictions and Ask Questions: Predictions and Questions List two predictions you have about "The Fourth of July." 1.) What was the first fourth of July like. 2.) How long have we celebrated the fourth of July?

List two questions you have about the reading selection at this point. 1.) What was the first of the fourth of July like? 2.) How did people feel about what they had accomplished to make this happen? Discuss: My Story Go to Post-Reading to complete this exercise. Reflect: Author's Implied Message Go to Post-Reading to complete this exercise. Understand the Assignment: Personal Narrative List two of the key features needed to write a successful narrative essay. Written using your personal view of the story or topic you are writing about. Uses examples that the reader can easily understand and relate to. Generate Ideas: My Moment A conflict is an external, or outside, event that causes an internal, or inside, response from you. What event or problem put you in a new, uncomfortable, or unfamiliar situation to which you had to react? List and describe the "moment" that you want to write about. Think about details like who was there and what important objects were around at that moment. I saw two kids bullied a girl because of the clothes she was wearing went brand new. It made me feel angry that these two kids were belittling someone because they didn't have new fancy clothes. Develop a Thesis: My Implied Thesis Put your main idea for your essay into words and type it in the response box. Why can't we treat everyone like they are a human being no different than ourselves? Organize Ideas: My Paragraphs List the focus of your first paragraph. Why does the color of our skin matter and not who we are as a person? List the focus of your second paragraph. When will we treat everyone with the same respect that we want to be treated with. List the focus of your third paragraph. What can we do to help open the eyes of those stuck in our country's past?
