Intended purpose of the clinical placement handbook. The Paramedic Clinical Placement Handbook is intended for students, staff, and Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) personnel, and outlines the clinical placement requirements and expectations of students whilst on placement. Students are required to read the document in its entirety and be aware of other QUT and/or policies which refer to mandatory requirements as well as student conduct and behaviour during placement.

Minimum personal requirements for QUT paramedic students to undertake placement. All students eligible to attend a paramedic clinical placement need to be aware of the minimum personal requirements required to undertake clinical placement. The following constitute the minimum requirements to undertake placement: 

Ethical behaviour

Behavioural stability

Mandatory reporting of issues which may

Awareness of

Communication skills

Sustainable performance

placement.

Fitness to practice

(Including issues

Adherence to professional and student codes of conduct

skeletal injuries. mental health and BMI)

Medical assessment

Supplementary medical

(including vaccinations)

legal requirements

impact on your

surrounding muscular-

assessments (if required) 

Blue card

Completing a clinical placement with QAS means you have a responsibility to the patients you are delivering care to. The minimum requirements relate to your performance as a university student paramedic, so you can decide whether the paramedic practicum is suitable for you. While the QUT Work Integrated Learning Support (WILS) and QAS are committed to making reasonable adjustments to allow students to complete clinical placements, the safety of QUT paramedic students, and the safety of others (e.g., QAS paramedics, hospital staff and patients) is not to be compromised by a failure to adhere to the above requirements. If you think you may experience challenges in meet the above minimum requirements, please discuss your concerns with the following people at your earliest convenience:

Confidentiality. You required to maintain the confidentiality of information (unless required by law), including but not limited to patient/client medical records, and any other documents which contain material of a confidential nature or information which relates to the personal affairs of QAS staff or patients. The rationale for maintaining confidentiality relates to:  Respecting patient autonomy.  The nature of the healthcare relationship-implied promise.  Consequentialism – lack of trust in QAS and/or future QUT students. If a breech in confidentiality occurs, possible consequences are:  A report will be made to the academic misconduct committee and disciplinary actions may be warranted (such as exclusion from the university).  Future placements will be compromised.  Removal from placement could occur, leading to an unsatisfactory grade for the unit.  Future career prospects and the ability to gain registration as a paramedic may be compromised.

Use of social media during placement. QUT social media policies still apply during placement. Serious breaches of this policy may result in the student failing the unit or possibly being excluded from the university for 12months. Furthermore, students need to be mindful of, and abide by QAS and Queensland Health policies surrounding social media. Inappropriate use of social media may result in student misconduct measures, which could include being removed from clinical placements, with the possibility of being excluded from the university. Inappropriate use of social media may also impact on a student’s future employment, their ability to register with AHPRA and may result in the student acquiring a criminal conviction. If you are on a case, do not take your phone out of your pocket. Absolutely no photographs of scenes, environments, or patients. This will result in major misconduct and failure of the unit including potential exclusion from the university.

Placement Allocation. Work Integrated Learning Support facilitates placement locations through InPlace in conjunction with availabilities provided by QAS and student rosters loaded to SPOT. Students need to be prepared to undertake placements as assigned by WILS and QAS. Students are required to organise their own accommodation whilst on placement. Students must not contact OICs to request line changes or station changes. The QAS clinical placement manager may approve a line/station change in exceptional or extenuating circumstances, depending on availability and the circumstance. In the first instance, students are to contact the unit coordinator if they are experiencing extenuating circumstances or encounter inappropriate misadventure whilst on placement, and a meeting will be arranged, if necessary, with the QAS clinical placement manager. Any action by students that can be interpreted as interfering with the organisation of arranged placements may result in disciplinary action. Of particular note, the QAS can request that QUT remove a student from the workplace if the students’ behaviour or skills proficiency are below expectations.

Student responsibilities before and during placement. It is the responsibility of students to:  Obtain a QUT student paramedic placement uniform and safety kit.  Successfully complete all mandatory placement requirements, such as medicals (and supplementary medicals if directed), blue cards, vaccinations, and orientation checklist.  Pay for the costs of travel to and from the placement station.  Pay for accommodation if required for placement.  Be familiar with the QUT student code of conduct and the QAS code of conduct.  Notify WILS of any changes to personal circumstances (e.g. musculoskeletal injury; changes in physical health including pregnancy, BMI, mental health or wellbeing status) that may affect your performance on placement.  Submit assessment items by the due dates as the QUT late submission of assignments policy applies to placement assessment items.  Produce a copy of the QUT mentor handbook to clinical mentors at the beginning of the first shift, and when requested during the placement. WILS, the placement unit coordinator and/or QAS may either prevent a student from commencing their placement or remove a student from placement in the event of a failure to complete all of the preplacement requirements.

Personal conduct on placement. Assume your placement is a 6-week job interview. Students are required to:  Meet the pre-requisite theoretical learning and skills for each placement.  Understand the assessment requirements for the placement and be familiar with the placement unit outline.  Be proactive in seeking out learning opportunities related to the specific objectives for the placement.  Practice within your relevant scope of practice for the placement.  Behave in a professional and courteous manner to QAS and QUT staff.  Adhere to QAS working conditions and guidelines including fatigue policies.  Maintain confidentiality about information pertaining to patients, peers, and staff.  Be fit to practice.  Notify the QUT placement unit coordinator and OIC in a timely manner when unable to attend an allocated shift due to sickness.  Provide the QUT placement unit coordinator with relevant sick certificates after being absent from an allocated shift.  Contact the QUT clinical placement unit coordinator in case of emergency such as: o after sustaining a workplace injury, o after experiencing misadventure,  Contact the QUT clinical placement unit coordinator when experiencing circumstances which may impact on your ability to successfully complete the remainder of the placement.  Comply with the QUT and QAS codes of conduct.  Avoid the use of smartphone devices whilst operational, especially during interactions with a patient. The use of the QAS FRG and CPM is acceptable.

Conditions under which students may be either prevented from commencing or removed from placement. The unit coordinator, WILS or QAS may either prevent a student from commencing placement or remove a student from placement in the event of unsatisfactory/unsafe behaviour and unethical conduct. Unsatisfactory/unsafe behaviour or unethical conduct includes but is not limited to the following: Failure to:  Obtain the necessary blue card checks, comply with immunisation requirements, complete orientation checklists, obtain medical clearance and supplementary medical clearance if required.  Demonstrate skills and/or attributes required to exercise duty of care to QAS patients.  Behave appropriately towards WILS staff, academic staff, QAS staff or peers.  Respect the confidentiality of patients, peers, or staff.  Arrive punctually or complete the rostered number of placement hours.  Notify the unit coordinator or WILS of any absence or inability to attend or complete the appropriate number of hours allocated for a placement shift.  Abide by the relevant QAS policies that apply to students undertaking clinical placements.  Maintain personal cleanliness and hygiene.  Wear and maintain your QUT placement uniform.  Assist with patient care at the level expected as per the QUT scope of practice, under the direction of the clinical mentor/supervising paramedic. Students may also be removed from placement if they:  Perform services/clinical procedures without the necessary supervision for the student’s level of expertise.  Fail to follow the directions of the clinical mentor/OIC.  Communicate to OIC’s with the purpose of changing placement sites/roster lines without the approval of WILS or the unit coordinator.  Practice outside of their scope of practice.  Access/use placement data bases/records for reasons other than their intent and purpose.  Breech QUT student code of conduct or QAS code of conduct guidelines.

Process of removing students from placement.   
