TERMS Iron Curtain Speech by Winston Churchill. He said that Europe was divided by an invisible iron curtain that ran through central and eastern europe. It divided them politically economically and in every way possible. Containment Fearing the spread of communism the US developed a strategy of containment to mobilize american resources to contain the speed of soviet regression. The Truman Doctrine was the key to this containment plan. It said the US would help any country threatened by communism. Other countries looked to use to maintain their freedom. Marshall Plan A part of the containment plant: To strengthen democratic governments the US would provide economic and financial aid to western europe to promote economic recovery so that these countries could rebuild. This was a successful plan Stalinize Containment made Stalin Nervous so he created Stalinization in eastern europe by tightening russian political controls with secret police and. This basically mean he tightened russian controls on the eastern european countries. Yugoslavia & Tito & National Communism One exception to Stalinization. This country was lead by Tito and he resisted Stalinization and created his own version of national communism. He had popular support from his people from liberating his country after the war. The border of Yugoslavia was mountainous and which helped with protecting the country Berlin Airlift Stalin didn't like that the americans and Brits were in Berlin. Stalin cut off all communication and transportation ties to Berlin in hopes to push these people out of Berlin. The result was the berlin airlift to the people trapped in Berlin. Stalin backed off after the supplies were brought in. The actions by Stalin divided germany further. Federal Republic of Germany FRG on the west with a based in Bonn parliamentary democracy German Democratic Republic Based in berlin with a communist dictatorship NATO Germany remaining divided caused the US and allies to form NATO. North Atlantic Treaty Organization its purpose was to contain the spread of communism and provide security for the rest of Europe. This made the Soviets nervous and NATO was countered with the Warsaw Pact which was an alliance of Eastern European communist countries with Russia. It was basically the communist version of NATO Berlin Wall Many people left the east to travel to the west. This made the soviets mad so they built the Berlin Wall. It divided the city of Berlin. It was stationed with soldiers with orders to shoot so that no one could leave the eastern communist center. This isolated everyone inside the wall from the rest of the world.

CONCEPTS What was Europe’s position in world affairs after the war? Europe is divided into democratic and communist countries and Berlin is split into an eastern and western sectors with the Berlin Wall. Stalin was afraid of the US and Britain and The US and Britain were afraid of Stalin spreading communism. New balance of power? US takes on new role as world leader. WW2 leads the groundwork for the cold war. The Us helps western european countries financially to help the countries rebuild. Soviet Union rose as one of the great superpowers. United Nations The Cold War World war 2 was over, fascism was dead but the cost of the war was undeniable with both human and material losses. The US and Soviet Union rose as the new super powers Causes? Loss of people to work, economic and material destruction especially in central and eastern europe. Factories and railroads were destroyed. People were baffled by the mass killings, bombs and people question the belief of man's goodness. WW2 reinforced the idea that civilization was fragile. The cold war was between the US and Soviet Union. It was a struggle between communism and democracy. It was a war fought of differing economic, political and ideological beliefs. Truman Doctrine The US promise to any country that needed protection from communism.
