COLUMBINE SHOOTER JOURNAL

Research conducted on violent behaviors and the mentally ill have been undertaken over the past decades. However, analyzing recent data that has been provided by prominent criminologists and psychologists, there are many gaps within the research procedures and conclusions in which have been resulted (Stuart, 2016). Violence among the mentally ill has become a prevalence in society, and most believe, is putting the public at higher risks of becoming victims at the hands of the mentally ill. According to our text, most psychologists believe that aggression is acquired and maintained in various ways of behaviors in which are important (Bartol & Bartol, 2017). The text also goes to state that adolescents become more intrigued with the acts of violence. For instance, road rage driving and watching violent oriented films. However, according to Mrs. Klebold, her son has never acted out with violent behaviors or displayed in violence towards others. Mrs. Klebold had no clue that her son was suicidal or even that he had mental challenges going on. From her perspective, there was nothing wrong with her son. This could have been as she stated because he wasn’t the type of person to display emotions or to ask others for help. When one keeps something that is wrongly going on within themselves, and they don’t express those emotions and feelings, they can result in tragedies such as the Columbine Shooting. If those who have mental disorders would have affordable access to the healthcare in which they need, they could be helped from acting out in violent behaviors. Significant determinants of violence continue to be a socio-demographic and economic factor in developing programs to aid the mentally ill (Stuart, 2016). Early identification measures need to be identified while proper diagnosis leads the management of the concurrent behaviors in which those with mental disorders display.

Over time, there a progressive convergence has been identified regarding those who have mental disorders and the violence that is increasing. If early detections are caught, then the disavowing of the competence of mental health professionals can better predict the outcomes of violence from the mentally ill (Stuart, 2016). Applying risk assessment tools can help promote decreases in prison sentences, mental health institutions, and can help bring on a social change for psychiatry and criminology.
