Extra credit PRAAT speech analysis assignment...
COMD 3100 Extra Credit: PRAAT Speech Analysis I am a big fan of spectrographic analysis. Since I am a visual learner, it has been extremely fascinating and helpful to see the visual representation of speech sounds through the spectrograph. Being able to recognize the silent gap and release burst in the spectrograph that resulted from the /p/ in the word “speech” helps me feel like I have a better view and grasp of the sounds that I am making. Since I have now learned more about formants, pitch, jitter, shimmer, etc., I can feel more confident in comparing speech samples to the typical values for those properties. I also liked learning about how spectrographic analysis is used with those with hearing impairments. Since those with hearing impairments are significantly disadvantaged when it comes to learning speech sounds (due to lack of feedback), it is nice to know that they have a visual tool to assist them in learning the more difficult sounds. I also really like how since it is a free program, that it is widely accessible. Having access to this type of technology while in school is extremely helpful, and I am excited to use it more and become even more familiar with it.
