Evgeny Yakushev Comm 1 – Public Speaking Chapter Questions Chapter 3

1. List, define, and state an advantage and a disadvantage for each of the four methods of delivery. There are 4 methods of delivery of a speech: memorization, reading, giving an impromptu speech, or speaking extemporaneously. Memorizing the speech may impress your audience, however it puts too much pressure on you as a speaker. When you are reading a speech from paper, you are communicating with the text, not the audience, which may result in the your speech not being received by your audience. On the other hand, reading the speech may help you show your writing skills, if that is the purpose of your speech. Impromptu is probably the most difficult type of speech. It is indeed impressive if someone gives a long impromptu speech, however such skill requires a lot of experience and daily practice, therefore only a limited number of people can be really successful in this type of speech. The extemporaneous speech is my favorite one. The biggest advantage of such speech is that it allows you to learn and understand your topic rather than knowing what you are supposed to say. However, this type of speech also requires a balance between all other three types in order to make the speech be effective.

2. List and briefly discuss 5 aspects of competent delivery.  

  

Speaker’s confidence – it is crucial for the speaker to be confident about what he is saying. A speaker must believe it himself. Be passionate about the subject – nobody will ever listen to a boring and pointless speech. A speaker must engage the audience to share his or her passion about the subject. Keep the speech short and simple – speak as mush time as you need to and perhaps leave some time for questions and comments. Use voice to make a stronger effect on the audience. Bring the speech to a reasonable conclusion; review the main points if appropriate.

3. Which of the five areas mentioned above do you believe that you need to improve the most, and what ideas do you have to improve? I believe I am a strong speaker overall, and I prefer to speak extemporaneously. With that in mind, the only way I could improve my speeches would be prepare the actual speech more detailed....
