COMM Notes COMM Writing strategies Week 2 Different ways to write an essay 1. Expository: Explains a phenomena (process) 2. Narrative: tells a story or with this essay you can create a situation that allows you to talk about your topic. 3. Descriptive: Describes a person, event, or place in detail 4. Persuasive: Attempts to convince the reader one way Purpose of essay: 1. To inform or present or educate? 2. To persuade or present and argument 3. To entertain or share or describe? Know your audience 1. A- Analyze (who is reading your work) 2. U Understand (What is there knowledge of your topic/message) 3. D Demographics (what is your reader’s age/education/field) 4. I Interest (What level of investment does your reader have in your work) 5. E Environment (What setting is your reader in?) 6. N Need (What information/ definition/ context does your reader need in order to understand your work) 7. C Customize (what do you need to adjust for your reader?) 8. E Expectations (What are your readers expectations from you?)
