Description

Surrey Crime Prevention Society and inclusivity of disabled employees

Main Message Surrey Crime Prevention Society is a local organization that focuses on supporting the safety of the community of surrey and achieving the goals of there community partners. They do this through several programs which include Citizens Community Safety Watch Program, Traffic safety-speed watch| Cell Watch, Community Safety Tours, Community Safety Youth Mentorship Program (vulnerable youth mentorship program), LIFT High School Work Experience Program LEARN | INFORM | FOCUS | TRUST (a work placement opportunity that helps high-school students who are interested in criminology and law), Civic Pride (positive mentorship of elementary school kids by S.C.P.S volunteers) , Community Clean up (graffiti removal) and more. Through previous experience as a volunteer for Surrey Crime Prevention Society at my old high-school L.A Matheson Secondary. I noticed a significant underrepresentation of disabled employees. Often when people think of disabilities, the first ones to be noticed are what meets the eye. Physical disabilities such as multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, and amputation just to list a few. The spectrum of disability is so wide that the psychical ones are just a certain part of it. Psychiatric disabilities' are more common yet are often overlooked these include major depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Argument

Very often people with physical disabilities are judged because people make assumptions and judge a persons’ ability to do something when they have a physical disability, where as a psychiatric disability can easily be hidden. This is often because people do not have the proper knowledge/resources to understand both of these illnesses. A person with a disability does not mean they are unable to do things, but more so a group of people who have the capabilities and experiences to do things that a person who doesn’t have a disability would not be able to do. “More than 40% of the local public harbors negative attitudes towards children with physical and mental disabilities owing to a lack of information, outright misconceptions of these disabilities and discriminatory prejudice based on fear, myth and stereotypes. Collectively this creates a stigma which impedes their personal, educational and professional development – truly holding them back – and results in their marginalization as adults with disabilities in a cycle which perpetuates.", According to UNICEF Tackles the Stigma of Persons with Disabilities through an Innovative Public Campaign in Georgia (2017) research home page. This quotation indicates how the lack of information around the sensitive nature of the topic of disability leads to presumptions. With the proper resources and training of current employers of Surrey Crime prevention Society, they will be to reach a segmentation of labor that has not been reached before. This will diversify the organization and bring in more valued partners. Which will lead to strong expansion of this organization. Strategies

This can start with the proper education of physical and psychiatric disabilities. This can be implemented in programs that SCPS already has. For example. In the Civic Pride program youth can have a day dedicated to raising awareness around people with disabilities and how they can become a better citizen. Providing opportunities where people with disabilities can rehabilitate through the process of working for the SCPS. Providing students in the LIFT High School Work Experience Program, with hope and encouragement. Using the strengths of people with these disabilities to show law enforcement is more than just physical or mental capability but the idea to move forward no matter what is holding oneself back. Another strategy that could be helpful includes providing certain adjustments for people living with physical and mental disabilities. This can be as simple as a peer counselling group within the facility, team bonding exercises, an open and inviting onboarding program. Explanation These strategies will be relevant to them to bring about organizational change because the benefits outweigh the cost. The talent that people with disabilities can bring to an organization can immensely change the atmosphere of how a company is perceived in the community....
