ATI- The Communicator 2.0- Family in a Stressful Situation

After working through this case, I was able to identify the therapeutic and nontherapeutic techniques demonstrated by the nurse in the scenarios. When presented with a family in a stressful situation, the nurse needs to be prepared to approach the situation in a professional and compassionate manner and be able to apply appropriate therapeutic communication techniques. In this scenario, the student nurse demonstrated therapeutic communication effectively and handled each situation in an appropriate manner when dealing with the family members of the patient. The student nurse in the video also did a great job of observing, listening, and making a connection for both the husband and wife who were giving each other more anxiety in the situation at hand. I plan on incorporating what I learned from this module into my care for patients in order to effectively communicate with the family members of the patients as individuals and also as the family as a whole. Families provide support and care for their loved ones and are often educated along with the patient and included in discharge instructions, so it is essential that we have outstanding communication techniques when dealing with stressful encounters within families....
