compare and contrast forms of government submitted on Friday, 10 September 2021, 12:53 PM Introduction This article will compare and contrast these five types of government, which include; Monarchy, Aristocracy, Tyranny, Oligarchy, Democracy. This text can compare and distinction these five sorts of government Monarchy Here, all political power in a country, empire, or kingdom is held by a single hereditary monarch, or in Spartans' case, a double ruler. The Monarch is in power for life, or until he is toppled, which is usually when he dies. This is a sovereign ruler with legal authority. The eldest son of a monarchy king assumes rule (Wikipedia, 2017). Aristocracy The leadership of affluent aristocrats was a typical feature of Greek city-states in the seventh century B.C. Even though they were few in number, this aristocracy gained power when the monarchs were deposed. The aristocrats amassed wealth by controlling the most valuable farms, and they barred regular citizens from serving on any government council or assembly. Aristocrats oppressed the poor who had no political connections to lay claim to change, claiming descent from the gods (History.com, 2010). Tyranny Tyrants were rulers who ascended to power by means that were brutal, unfair, and unconstitutional. “Frequently assassinating their predecessors” (Cartwright, 2013). Oligarchy “An Oligarchy is a system of political power controlled by a chosen group of individuals, often small in number but sometimes huge in number (Cartwright, 2013),” according to Cartwright. “Oligarchy is ruled by a few” (Brand, n.d., pg 9) according to Brand. Sparta was administered by two kings, five Ephors, and 60 elders Gerousia (Brand, n.d., pp 29). Democracy Let us now turn our attention to the concept of democracy. “Democracy was the rule of the ‘demos'free, native-born males,” (Brand, n.d., page 29). People are referred to as demos in Greek. And Kratos is a Greek word for power. This would imply that democracy is a kind of government based on popular power. Athens was the sole democratic city-state in Greece. In addition, for the rest of the world, Athens was the birthplace of democracy. The Athenian democracy's ruling body was the citizen’s Assembly (Four Forms of Government in Ancient Greece, n.d.). It provided a platform for citizens to express themselves. In Athens, even the impoverished had a say.

To summarize, each system of governance is distinct in its own right. Many of them are similar. In truth, many Greek city-states, particularly over long periods of time, had numerous types of government, with Athens serving as a classic example. But, regardless of which system of administration each citystate used, it all contributed to the formation of our modern worldview in some manner. Finally, we would know nothing about tyranny, oligarchy, monarchy, aristocracy, or democracy if one of the government forms was controlled by tyranny, oligarchy, monarchy, aristocracy, or democracy.
