TOPIC: WORKING STUDENTS VS UNEMPLOYED STUDENTS

A) Introduction There are various differences between a working student and an unemployed student, such as the generation of their income, resume-building abilities and academic performance.

B) Body Paragraph

Body Paragraph I Topic Sentence 1 One of the differences between working students and unemployed students is the generation of their income. Supporting Detail 1 Unlike unemployed students, working students can generate their own income. This simultaneously results the working students to graduate with less student debt, unlike unemployed students who rely heavily on parents/scholarship/student loans. Supporting Detail 2 The College of St. Scholastica (2018) states that James Finn, a travel vlogger, once estimated that he could reduce his debts if he had worked in college. Supporting Detail 3 However, students who work for a different cause than generating an income for themselves may experience a negative effect. Gail (2015) stated in the Chicago Tribune that students tend to work full-time out of fear of taking loans, which causes their studies to suffer.

Body Paragraph II Topic Sentence 2 Besides that, working students and unemployed students contrast when it comes to their gained experiences.

Supporting Detail 1 In the article ‘Benefits of Having a Job in College ‘, Rebecca (2018) states that practical job skills can be learned through the jobs one had in college. Supporting Detail 2 Beside soft skills, having a job proves to future employers that one has real world experience, which inevitably boosts one’s resume, says Rebecca. Supporting Detail 3 However, unemployed students may have the upper hand when it comes to prioritizing their own leisure time and extracurricular activities, which is less likely expected from employed students (The College of St. Scholastica, 2018). Although unemployed students may not experience real world experiences, including oneself in extracurricular activities is equally important as it helps boost a student’s skills.

Body Paragraph III Topic Sentence 3 Furthermore, a students academic performance may vary between a working student and an unemployed student. Supporting Detail 1 According to an article from CNBC’s Make It, Abigail (2017) states that students who worked less than 20 hours had a better average grade compared to nonworking students, as said by the researches for the Bureau of Labour Statistics. Supporting Detail 2 However, students who are incapable of managing their times properly may receive a negative setback from working, unlike the unemployed students who are able to solely focus on their studies. Supporting Detail 3 Based on her article in College Raptor, Allison (2018) states that lower grades may be caused by overworking and lack of studying.

C) Conclusion A student’s generation of their income, resume-building abilities and academic performance are some of the contrasting factors between an unemployed student and a working student. Although gaining real world experience is important to boost one’s resume, managing one’s time to work and study is equally as important. Thus, a student must find balance between their work and studies to secure a better and brighter future.
