ABSTRACT This study investigates the level of computer awareness among some selected junior secondary schools’ student in Zaria LGA Kaduna State. The study had three objectives and three research questions. Survey design was adopted for the study. The population of the student was 3,523 students and 90 students from three randomly selected secondary schools were used as sample for the study. Questionnaire was used for data collection. The data collected were analyzed using frequency and percentage to answer the research questions. The result obtained showed that: Computer awareness level of Junior secondary school students in Zaria LGA Kaduna state is moderate, the students operate computer to the extent that they start computer on their own, access any program on the computer, solve complex problems using computer, type on the keyboard with ease, create a file on a computer and save document they are working on in the file but only few (14%) of the student have the knowledge of power point. Based on the findings, the following recommendations were proffered: The government should increase the number of computers available in junior secondary schools and also computer application software on various subjects to be used by teachers to improve teaching and learning process in the schools, doing so will increase the computer awareness level of the students, Parents should help in the provision of personal computers for their children to operate on a regular basis, Junior secondary school students should be provided with adequate training in the use of computer programmes especially Microsoft PowerPoint and their use in lesson delivery.

CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION 1.1 Background of the Study Computer literacy is the knowledge and the ability of a teacher to use computers and related technology efficiently and with a range of level. It can also be defined as the comfort feel one has with using computer programs and other applications such as Microsoft word, database management, Microsoft PowerPoint among other applications. Adio (2003) defined computer literacy as the ability of a computer user to operate the computer system and its gadgets to solve a given problem. Onasanya (2001) asserted that as the world enters the third millennium, there is a great challenge to update the process of teaching and learning and to take a giant stride toward keeping abreast of technological developments and toward application of computer literacy in Nigerian educational system. The use of computer is now felt in every sector of human endeavor for the fact that they have been known to simplify all identifiable operations. The use or computer in schools in one form or another has become quite fashionable in many countries (Haruun 2005) The computerization of technical training activities in the industrialized nation can be replicated in the developing nations, especially Nigeria, but such an objective can hardly be realized without a large pool of indigenous trainers with the requisite computer literacy 1

From the contribution of John Iloanusi (2008) computer are useful for storing information about crimes, criminals and suspects. He said it could be very useful in crime detection and prevention. Such system can be interfaced with photograph capturing and finger print system. Okorie (2008) in his own opinion said that the use of computer makes data into a very small storage space. Information storage and retrieval are speeded up and computer records an easily be up-dated as the need arises Today, in our nation, the lack of computer science education facilities and the generally computer illiterate citizenry has deprived learners of the much desired multi-media learning opportunities (Akudolu, 2001). She opined that teaching computer studies in schools will give learners the means not only for academic excellence, but also for self-fulfillment. While suggesting for incorporation of computer education into school system especially teacher education programmes, Lawal (2000), argued that such move would prepare the teachers to utilize computer driven strategies/ facilities to enrich classroom instruction, by facing realities in the classroom. Computer science education plays the role of equipping individuals with skills, knowledge and attitudes that will enable individuals engage in a life-time of productive work and retraining employees so as to fit into jobs, offering of entrepreneurial skill and development programme. It also creates access to quality job competencies and skills needed for stable employment. Also in awareness of the

2

relevance of computer literacy, the Federal Government has started to issue out policies that covers computer use, including the National Policy on Computer Education, of which the National Computer Education Curriculum is one of its prime offshoot. In Nigeria, the use of computer is just gaining ground.

Nigerians are

becoming more computer conscious and are realizing the enormous benefit it offers. According to Adekunle Adegbaje (2000) computers is the latest as the country develops. It has gained acceptance in all sector of the economy. It is gaining increasing popularity and this will increase with time. Some people encounter such serious cases of computer shock, terminal terror or network neurosis that they avoid using computerized learning systems (Shineiderman, 2000). Bertino (2005) suggested a reason why target audience in computing in the past has mistrust and fear of computer technology. According to him, “interfaces were incomprehensible, ambiguous and intimidating, leaving students feeling frustrated, insecure and even frightened. It has hoped, that the findings of the study would provide a knowledge based reflection on computer awareness in junior secondary schools which as JSS 1 to JSS 3.

The output of this research could be translated into positive action of

3

Transforming all the student learning capacity by assisting them to remove this mental block of lack of confidence. 1.2 Statement of the Problem The world has totally become computer age and the entire globe has become a global village through the explosion of application of computer. Computer uses an application software have impacted tremendously on all human endeavors today education, medicine, military, politics, agriculture, religion, business and so on. This means that for anybody (student) or any cooperate body to function effectively and efficiently in any field of human endeavor today, computer awareness is a basic necessity more so for science teacher and student to properly deliver in different field of specialization in today computer age. 1.3 Objectives of the Study 1)

To find out the computer awareness level among junior secondary school students.

2)

To find out the extent to which junior secondary school students do operate computer.

3)

To find out the percentage of junior secondary school students that have the knowledge of power point.

4

1.4 Research question 1) What is the computer awareness level among junior secondary school students? 2) To what extent do junior secondary school students operate computer? 3) What is the percentage of secondary school students that have the knowledge of power point? 1.5 Significance of the Study The significance of this study is as follows: To students, in our educational institutions today the work of computer cannot be overemphasized. Having known the importance of computer and their level of awareness in computer from this project work, it will give them courage and strength to study computer with full interest. The students will equally use this work to develop their own work in writing their own project. To parents, today a lot of things could be done with computer. Thus project will help the parents to know the necessity of computer awareness in our society and can motivate them to give their children full support in acquiring the knowledge of computer. This can also make them to buy computer text and pay for where they are learning computer. Fundamentally, the study would serve as a reference material for further studies in the application of computer to teaching and learning. Especially in science and technology, educational software developers could mass produce Computer 5

Assisted Basic Technology Package for use by Junior Secondary Schools, Teachers and Students to enhance the level of awareness of computer in teaching and learning of Basic Technology in junior secondary schools. 1.6 Basic Assumption 1) It is assumed that computer awareness could enhance student academic performance in junior secondary school. 2) It is also assumed that students with higher level of computer awareness have more interest in acquiring computer skills and knowledge than those who possess lower level of computer awareness. 3) Also, it is assumed that junior secondary school students have low level of computer awareness 1.7 Scope of Study The study was limited to some selected junior secondary schools within Zaria local government area, Kaduna state. The selected schools are: (1)

CHAPTER TWO LITERATURE REVIEW 2.1 Introduction This chapter reviewed related literature to the study. In particular; it surveys the history and generation of computer. Followed by brief history of computer in Nigerian educational system, Current status of computer education in Nigerian schools and then computer application in teaching and learning. 2.2 History and generation of computer 2.3 Brief History of computer in Nigerian educational system 2.4 Current Status of Computer Education in Nigerian Schools 2.5 Computer application in teaching and learning

2.2 History and Generation of Computer Shelly Cashman (2011) Described computer as an electronic device, operating under the control of instructions stored in its own memory, that can accept data, process the data according to specified rules, produce results, and store the results for future use. Computer could be said to be (according to Ngene 2007) a machine which extracts data from input device, performs arithmetic and logical operation in accordance with defined program and finally transfers processed data to an output device either for further processing or in printed forms such as business documents. 7

The earliest device that qualifies as a digital computer is the Abacus. A calculation aid invented about 600BC the abacus permits the users to represent numbers by positions of beads on a rack. Simple addition and subtraction can be carried out rapidly and efficiently by positioning the beads appropriately. The abacus is still widely used and can be used for calculation at an amazing speed.

The first

mechanical adding machine invented by Blaise Pascal, a French Custom official in 1642. Baron Gottfried Wilhelm Von Leibniz of Germany in 1671 invented the first calculator for multiplication it is still undergoing improvement. Keyboard machines originated in the United States in the 1880’s and of course continues till this day. Business machine and calculators made their appearance in Europe and America toward the end of the nineteenth century. They are the products of such present industrial giants as international Business machines corporation, the Remington Rand Division of Sperry Rand Corporation, the Monroc calculating Division of Litton industries, the National Cash Register Company etc. The father of Modern digital computer is considered to be Charles Babbage, a nineteenth century professor at Cambridge University who proposed a differential engine to the British Admiralty. He was given funds in 1823 to develop such a device but did not succeed. In 1833, on his own be started development of an analytical engine and worked on it until 1842. Neither of these devices were successful, mainly because of the hardware limitations of the period. However, his 8

efforts established a number of principles which have been shown to be fundamental to the design of any digital computer. The modern computer is electronic and digital.

An electronic machine uses

components such as vacuum tube transistors, and integrated chips to implement certain functions. A machine is also said to be digital it uses the binary arithmetic system as the bases of its operation. The electronic, digital computer dates back to the early 1940’s of course analog computers exist. An analog computer does not count in two digits but rather continuously measures and compares changing values examples include a computerized thermostat that regulate heat or air conditioner in a building, an analog radio turner with a needle that moves from station to station when you turn a knob. A digital turner on the contrary, displays a specific and praise frequency when you push a button. The computer works on data, Data consist of facts and numbers suitable for communication ...
