Problems at Work
John finds minimum wage job at Italian restaurant Pay was irregular as his employer would pay him part of his salary on Monday; pay him $50 on Monday and the other $50 on Friday Felt people were prejudice against him and the perception made work stressful John felt that the system would never deliver him a fair trial Still had great commitment to his immediate family and a great need to play the father role for his family
A Day in Court
Eli offers John great assistance and contacted an attorney for him Eli is a professor at the University of Pennsylvania John’s parole officer is not on his side Judge granted John a new parole officer, being considerate of what he has been through John is thankful that Eli cared about his situation and knows the only way this went so well was because of him
Finding a Union Job
John’s fine cost him $100 a month and his salary was $400; taking care of everyone in his household on top of that John’s job included no benefits People at his job often picked on him knowing he needed the job so he couldn’t retaliate John got a new job, but his employers are hesitant and pressure him not to mess up Job had a lack of trust for blacks because a black person labeled on the job makes other black people look bad The history of racial prejudice in that society made it hard for Curtis to recommend John, but he took a chance
Trust and Insecurity
John landed a new job, as well as 4 days in jail due to slapping his girlfriend for child endangerment John passed his period of probation and got admitted to the union
More Trouble
After he missed a payment, they tried to place him in jail His parole officer acted as if she didn’t know him after he missed John had to use his kids’ college funds to pay off the fines After paying the fine, they still placed him in jail for 6 months and he need a private attorney to file a petition for early parole
The Probation Officer
The parole officer had reasoning for treating John the way he does because John lied to him during their first meeting The parole officer was black, meaning he isn’t being uptight, but he has a reputation to protect
Socialization
John started being teased at work about personal business John abruptly quit after his baby mothers started “getting papers on him” to receive good benefits
Drug Dealing
John explains “caps” and they’re worth $5, and how young kids at sixteen, seventeen, and eighteen are killing each other over caps or turf A friend of his was killed for cheating people by selling fake drugs John goes into detail about how ladies who used to be hard to get with will now do anything for a dollar The drugs they use are “heavy” and people become addicted Captain Kirk, aka cocaine, is what John believes will mess up a person’s life His aunt used to be someone who would do good for herself; she now lays there all day waiting for a “blast” or hit 90 out of 100 people that’s on welfare is on drugs The prettiest women are now doing whatever for the high, referred to as “instant ho’s”...
