The Construction of the Panama Canal By: Kennedy Fancher Reasons for the Event One of the reasons the US built the canal was to strengthen the navy by allowing them to travel between the oceans.Another reason is that the USS Oregon battleship's journey from California to Cuba was extremely long, leading the US to build a canal.Another reason for the canal's construction was that the United States needed a way to transport products from one side of the ocean to the other.

Incidents Leading up to the Event A Frenchman was the first to attempt to construct a canal. He tried, but he failed since he lacked the necessary instruments and went bankrupt.Following that incident, an uprising was planned because Colombians refused to grant the United States the right to own a canal.The Hay Bunau Varilla Treaty secured them independence and provided them permanent possession of the land needed to build the canal.

What took place during the Event In 1904, work on the canals began.Most of the engineers struggled due to the extreme weather and mountains.They even built a dam to control the river from flowing due to the constant rainfall.They had to deal with malaria and a variety of other illnesses, which resulted in the deaths of at least 5,000 employees.

Results of the Event The canal was built at a cost of around 375 million dollars. It first opened its doors in August of 1914. Today, it serves as a commerce route for the United States and is controlled by Panama. The canal is also one of the most important man made canals in the
