Description

Activity 3.1.2: Diagnostic Imaging A) Read through Family Bulletin 3, then read the introduction and procedure for Activity 3.1.2. Take notes in the form of an outline on the Diagnostic Imaging slideshow in step 1 as it is being presented (please  use a different color font):  Outline: ● X-rays are noninvasive images of the body, create two dimensional images, and can increase risk of cancer, quick and painless and small amounts of radiation exposure ● CT scans are noninvasive, scans the pelvis, chest, abdomen, spine, and other structures ● MRI is a noninvasive scan that uses powerful magnets and radio waves, examines the brain spine, joint, abdomen, blood vessels and pelvis ● Bone scan is noninvasive and is a nuclear image test, examining abnormalities in the skeleton B) Create a concept map for the diagnostic techniques presented in the Diagnostic Imaging slideshow using Lucidchart (h  ttps://www.lucidchart.com/pages/templates) or Inspiration software. The following information for each technique must be included: ● ● ●

How the technology works What the images show What typical uses for the technology are

Linking terms or phrases must appear on the arrows of the map. Refer to the Concept Map Rubric from Activity 3.1.2 for grading. Insert  your completed concept map here:

C) Complete the conclusion questions (please  use a different color font):  ● A patient enters a hospital after hitting her head in a car accident. She is diagnosed with a fractured skull but has other symptoms that show she is suffering from brain damage. What technology should be used to confirm this diagnosis? A CT scan should be used to confirm the diagnosis as it can give more information than x rays and this allows the doctors to take images of the brain from different angles to determine the damage is ● Come up with a situation where it would be inappropriate to use an MRI scan as a diagnostic tool. if a patient has metal inside their body such as metal plates or metal inside their bodies from surgery

● Explain why a combination of X-rays, CT scans, bone scans and MRI scans is used when diagnosing bone cancer. They are all used when diagnosing bone cancer because they show different views of the body and where the cancer is located.

D) Conduct research on two different radiological technologists: an MRI radiographer and a CT radiographer. Use reliable resources and provide end-of-document citations according to PLTW’s citation protocol (please  use a different color font): 

MRI radiographer

Required education and training: Certificate or associate's degree Clinical internship Daily duties and responsibilities: ● capture images on MRI scanners ● Take a patient's medical history ● Answer a patient's questions ● Shield areas of the body that don't need to be examined ● Position patients for scanning ● Keep a patient's medical records Salary range: $71,670 Required experience: MRI technologists typically have less than 5 years of work experience as radiologic technologists.

CT radiographer

Required education and training: Certificate, associate's degree or bachelor's degree in radiologic technology or a similar field Daily duties and responsibilities: ● preparing and operating the CT scanner ● positioning patients ● assist doctors in administering oral or intravenous sedatives to patients before a scan ● complete administrative work, such as recording the scan time and requesting scans Salary range: $59,520 Required experience: Employers seek candidates with at least one year of experience

E) In your assigned small group, create an advertisement for a job opening for a MRI radiographer and a CT radiographer. Use the information you collected in step D to assist you. Insert your two completed advertisements here:

F) Complete the remaining conclusion questions (please  use a different color font):  ● What do you think would be the most satisfying part of a career as an MRI or CT radiographer? Explain why. The most satisfying part of a career as an MRI or CT radiographer I think would be finding ways and certain specialists to help them.

● What do you think would be the most frustrating part of a career as an MRI or CT radiographer? Explain why. I think the most frustrating part would be not being able to help out the patient due to them getting worse or getting a scan too late and your disease is too bad at a point where it's incurable. ● Would this be a career area you would be interested in pursuing? Why or why not? I think this would be a good career because my mom had cancer and she was sure there was somerthing wrong but her doctors assured her that she was fin so she hadto set up her own appointment and found a really good doctor which took bodys, mris, and ct scans which then resulted in her finding out she has stage 4 breast cancer which was in her lymp nodes. So I’d like to be able to helpothers who are going through a scary time or just in general help others.

● Why do you think patients are often fearful of having an MRI or CT scan? -noises -radiation exposure -tight spaces -first time -young child -the inside of them is cold and smells metally

● How do MRI and CT scan technologies compare to ultrasonography? These scans and tests are used as medical interventions and diagnostic tests to see if someone has a problem.
