A month later in May, a larger French force followed him there and forced him to surrender. Even though he was defeated, Washington became a hero of the colonists because they felt that he was standing up for their rights. June, 1754: The British government realized that they couldn’t win a war with both the French army and the Iroquois. The Iroquois controlled western New York and the French had to march through it to get to the Ohio River Valley. In order to keep peace with the Iroquois, 7 of the 13 colonies sent delegates (representatives) to Albany New York to negotiate with the leaders of the Iroquois. During the Albany Conference, the Iroquois agreed to remain neutral. The delegates also used the Albany Conference to appoint a supreme commander of all the Redcoats (British Troops) in the colonies. January 1755: General Braddock arrived in Virginia from England and brought 1,400 Redcoats with him. He took George Washington as his second in command and marched west. Braddock and Washington wanted to attack the French forces at Fort Duquesne but before they got there they were ambushed (attacked by surprise) by French soldiers and their Native American allies, the Delaware Tribe. General Braddock was killed and Washington took command of the army. Washington kept his cool under fire and managed to retreat and get his troops out of danger. The Iroquois realized that the British could not be defeated and forced the Delaware Tribe to stop attacking English colonists.
