Characteristics of Waves Online Lab _______________________

Name

6-MS-PS4-1: Use mathematical representations to describe a simple model for waves that includes how the amplitude of a wave is related to the energy in a wave and how the frequency and wavelength change the expression of the wave

In this lab you will investigate the characteristics of a wave and how those characteristics are related and change in magnitude depending on the energy of the wave by examining water waves. All waves have common measurable characteristics, amplitude, wavelength and frequency.   

Wavelength is measured from a crest to a crest or a trough to a trough. Use the grid on the graph. Count the boxes to measure a wavelength. Amplitude is the height of a wave. Use the 0 line at the water’s surface and count boxes going up or down on the grid to determine amplitude. Frequency measure how many waves cycles pass a point at a given time. The Step button will help you determine frequency. Get a full set on the grid (from one end to the other) and divide the seconds by the number of crests.

Click on the link to complete the virtual lab. Write your responses on this doc. Use complete sentences for the Journal writing. You may work with a partner, but all complete their own answer doc. http://www.glencoe.com/sites/common_assets/science/virtual_labs/E05/E05.html

This is what you should see. It is important to read the information in the side bar. Scroll to follow the steps of the lab. Play with the settings before you start to understand the site. It is important to turn your sound off!

Data Table:

Journal Reflection: Use complete sentences to develop your response. Include data (numbers) from the graph to support your responses.
