CONDITIONING WITH JIM & DWIGHT Part 1. Watch “The Office Classical Conditioning” (36 seconds) or “Jim conditions Dwight” (68 seconds) on YouTube (segment shows up under both titles; link should be posted on D2L) .

Part 2. Answer these questions after viewing the segment. Classical Conditioning 1.

OK. Which response or behavior of Dwight was classically conditioned by Jim? Each time Dwight hears the computer rebooting, he gets a bad taste in his mouth.

2. OK. Was the response or behavior VOLUNTARY or INVOLUNTARY? (circle one)

OK

3. Label each element of classical conditioning demonstrated by Jim and Dwight in this episode. NS = COMPUTER REBOOT SOUND UCS = ALTOID

CS = COMPUTER REBOOT SOUND

UCR = DWIGHT HAS BAD TASTE IN MOUTH FOR ALTOID CR = DWIGHT BAD TASTE WHEN COMPUTER MAKES REBOOT SOUND.

Operant Conditioning 4.

OK. Which response or behavior of Dwight’s was operantly conditioned by Jim? OK Dwight’s hand would go out for an Altoid each time he heard the computer rebooting.

5. Was the response or behavior VOLUNTARY or INVOLUNTARY? (circle one) 6.

OK. Was the target response or behavior of Dwight REINFORCED or PUNISHED?

(circle one)

OK.

POSITIVELY REINFORCED. 7. OK. Describe HOW the target behavior of Dwight was either reinforced or punished.

OK.

The target behavior was for Dwight to put his hand out each time he heard the computer reboot and the Altoid was like a reward; reinforcing the behavior. Each time Dwight put his hand out, he was rewarded with a mint.

CONTINUED ON PAGE 2 GENERALIZATION, DISCRIMINATION, & SPONTANEOUS RECOVERY 8.

OK. How would generalization be demonstrated by Dwight for the operantly conditioned behavior?

That

is, how would we know if Dwight generalized this learning? When Jim reboots his computer, he is signing off which makes a similar sound as when signing on. Jim could also reach for a mint when hearing the sound the computer makes when turning back on. This would be similar, but not the exact same as when he reaches when hearing the sound of the computer shutting off. 9. OK. How would generalization be demonstrated by Dwight for the classically conditioned response? That is, how would we know if Dwight generalized this learning? Similar to the operant conditioned behavior, Dwight could also respond with having a bad taste in his mouth when hearing the sign on chime even though it is not the exact same as the sign off chime.

10. OK. How might discrimination be demonstrated by Dwight for the operantly conditioned behavior? That is, how would we know if Dwight discriminated this learning? The demonstration of discrimination in this scenario is how Dwight only responds to the sound of the computer when putting his hand out and not to any other sound such as an email notification sound.

11. OK. How might discrimination be demonstrated by Dwight for the classically conditioned response? That is, how would we know if Dwight discriminated this learning? The same concept as with the operant conditioned behavior, however Dwight only gets a bad taste in his mouth from the sound of the computer signing off and not to other sounds.

12. OK. Explain how spontaneous recovery would be likely to occur for either the classically conditioned response or the operantly conditioned behavior. After a break in the reinforcement of behavior or response with an Altoid, Dwight may slowly stop putting his hand out and having a bad taste in his mouth, leading to extinction. After this has happened, Dwight may have a spontaneous recovery when hearing the sound of the computer rebooting, even though he has not had the response or behavior in some time....
