NCM 103 Fundamentals of Nursing Practice/Theory
Course Description: This theoretical course provides the learners with the overview of nursing as a science, an art and a profession. It deals with the concept of man as a holistic being comprised of bio-psychosocial and spiritual dimensions. It includes a discussion on the different roles of a nurse emphasizing health promotion, maintenance of health and illness prevention utilizing the nursing process. It includes the basic nursing skills needed in the care of individual clients. Placement: First year, 2nd Semester Credit: Theory 3 units (54 hours) Prerequisite: Anatomy, TFN, Biochemistry Objectives: 1. Provide safe and quality care to clients at home, in hospital and in community using the nursing process. 2. Continuously enhance knowledge, attitude and skills in nursing research for the improvement of patient care, nursing education and nursing practice. 3. Apply evidence-based practice through research in bedside care, critical care, emergency care and primary health care setting. 4. Utilize research findings in various areas of nursing with its focus on uplifting the standards of nursing practice. 5. Exercise ethico-moral and legal responsibilities in their task performance. 6. Enhance their personal and professional development through the nurse’s code of ethics and nursing value system. 7. Apply skills in patient care management, records, resources and patient’s environment to improve delivery of quality health care. 8. Demonstrate skills in health education and communication with clients and their significant others as well as members of the health team. 9. Create an open social climate with clients and their significant others, at facilitating client’s recovery and teamwork effectiveness of the members of the health team. 10. Demonstrate leadership skills in patient care management. 11. Apply skills in critical thinking, creativity, decision-making and problemsolving in client care situations across the life span. 12.
