Description

COMM 1101-26 Informative speech Preparation outline Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Specific purpose: To inform the class about what CPR is and how it is performed in a medical emergency situation while the paramedics are on their way to the scene. Thesis: cardiopulmonary resuscitation which is better known as CPR is a simple emergency procedure which can save lives but we need to know when and why it is performed and the steps that should be taken like evaluating the situation and reaching out for the emergency medical services and then performing the actual steps of CPR. Now that I have introduced to the topic I will be speaking about, I will go ahead and talk about when and why CPR is performed. I. Why do I need to know about CPR when I am not even a healthcare professional? This might be the response when we first hear about CPR. But there is no rocket science involved in it and it is an important thing that we should know about. According to Amelie G Ramirez et al, more than 325,000 Americans die each year from cardiac arrest outside the hospital. Without resuscitation, cardiac arrest almost always results in death. This calls for the need for people in our community to get trained in CPR so that we can reduce the number of deaths which can be avoided. With this speech, I will be informing you about when and why CPR is performed and evaluation of the situation before moving on to the actual process or the steps of giving a CPR.

A. When to perform CPR 

In case of sudden cardiac arrest

Drowning in water while swimming in a sea or a swimming pool

In case of no sign of breathing

B. Why CPR is performed 

Immediate revival of the victim same as the first aid

Increase the chance of survival

Makes it easier for paramedics to provide immediate care

After knowing the purpose of performing CPR, now I will talk about how to evaluate the situation and then reaching out for medical assistance. II. Secondly, evaluate the situation of the victim and the surrounding and call emergency medical service (EMS) A. It is important to remain calm and ensure the safety of yourself and the victim B. Check the pulse and responsiveness by gently shaking the victim. If the victim is conscious ask if or she is OK C. Call 911 immediately D. If people are around, ask for help and make someone call 911 or the nearest hospital E. If you are alone, make a call by yourself and give all the information that explains the situation After assessing the situation, now I will explain about various steps of the CPR. III. Thirdly, you can start CPR

A. Ensure the correct position of the victim 

Place the victim’s body onto their back in a stable position with careful movements of head and neck so as to avoid any spinal cord injury

Lay down or sit next to the victim’s shoulders

B. Evaluate on the ABC 

Check the airway for any blockage and make sure it is open i. Tilt the head backward with the closest hand and using the other hand lift the chin

Check if the victim is breathing i. Three ways – looking at the rising and falling of the chest or listening to the breathing with ear or feeling the breath with fingers near the nose for only 10 seconds.

Check for any signs of pulse/circulation – at the wrist or in the neck

C. If there is no sign of breathing and pulse then begin CPR 

Position your hands one above another in the middle of the victim’s chest

Keep your arms straight and shoulder in line with the arms

Begin compressing the victim’s chest at least 2 inches deep with a rate of minimum of 100 compressions per minute

Alternate two rescue breaths with compressions. i.

Rescue breath can be given by tilting back the victim’s head and lifting the chin.

ii.

Shut the nose by pinching and blow air into victim’s mouth so that the chest rises.

iii.

Observe for the rise in chest and if it is not there then the victim may be choking and may require removal of any object stuck inside the mouth

Continue the process of CPR until the victim gains consciousness and starts breathing or the paramedics arrive at the scene

Discontinue CPR if there are no signs of revival of the victim or incase of exhaustion

Taking a Basic life support (BLS) training course that is conducted by American Red Cross can equip you with all the necessary skills to respond to any medical emergencies that might occur anywhere and anytime. Conclusion I.

In conclusion, I have discussed about various aspects of CPR. 

First, I discussed about when and why CPR is given

Then, I talked about evaluating the situation of the victim and the surrounding and how to reach out for help by calling EMS

 II.

Finally, I elaborated on the process of performing CPR

CPR is a simple procedure and the knowledge of performing it, can be very handy in life and death situation where the victim needs CPR 

You do not need to have a medical background to learn about CPR

It helps the paramedics to provide immediate care to the victim

Most importantly it can save lives, may be your loved one or a complete stranger.
