Why are we fascinated in crime?     

Curiosity Fascination Fear Empathy Morals

“true crime is a helpful conduit for women to explore ideas of vulnerability and the difficulties of living in a world where one's gender puts you under constant threat by society. It can be a way to process one's own anxieties about misogyny and violence, issues that are often tough to discuss with friends and family.” Crime tends to focus more on individual crime rather than systemic issues.

Fishbowl Discussion “Women finds it hard to feel relevant in society. If women is bold in society she is seen as bossy/bitch” Women are more lowkey in their crimes. Less violent crimes and use tools such as poison etc. Are women treated different in judicial system? Women brings up athlete college student who raped student but didn’t go to jail because of his athletic potential. “The idea of women being killers is still shocking and seen as more different due to the way they are represented in society”. Women are viewed as more compassionate. Are criminals born or made? Why did lady kill her sister? Presumed answers were that she was jealous of her sister dating this guy. Wanted the guy back. “Psychopath is only concerned with what pleases them and what gives them pleasure”- no empathy and sympathy Mother murders son so that the father would come to the funeral.

China using AI to predict who will commit crime next- using facial recognition to read expressions and make predictions. Techniques and principles from neuroscience to improve our understanding of crime, to predict crime and ultimately to prevent crime. Case of Michael- child pornography and child molestation of step daughter. Caused by tumour in brain that caused brain dysfunction that led to the deviant behaviour of paedophilia. Is he guilty? I believe he is as he was able to identify that he was performing immoral behaviour when he started visiting brothels disguised as massage parlours so he decided to start keeping a secret porn paedophilia collection. He was aware of his behaviour. Even though the tumour may have been causing extreme hormonal changes and affecting his psyche his cognitive sense was still performing to understand the crimes he was doing. Also, looking at this case from the stepdaughter’s point of view it presents a case that she is a victim, regardless of whether her stepfather was affected by his tumour or not. However, since the family was willing to reunite with him and that he turned normal after the tumour was removed it can be argued that he was greatly influenced by his tumour.

Reducing impulsivity in repeat-violent offenders using selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor       

Neurotransmitter Dense expression of serotonergic receptors in the prefrontal cortex suggest it is a modulator of higher order executive functioning. A biological brake on our behaviour ReINVEST Trial- anti depressant (sertraline) vs placebo Men with 2+ prior convictions (with or without imprisonment) for a violent offence (manslaughter, robbery, assault) 60% have Domestic Violence convictions Score of 70 or over on the Baratt impulsiveness scale

Is there a criminal gene?      

The notion of the criminal gene has been disregarded. However, some psychopathic behaviour is believed to be grounded in the genetic makeup. Criminal behaviour passed onto offspring -> Genetics or bad upbringing?? Genetic code- Four bases (adenine, thymine, guanine, cytosine) inherited diseases (cystic fibrosis, haemochromatosis, breast cancer, bowel cancer etc.) Errors in non-protein coding sequence -> much harder to quantitate

Klinefelter Syndrome (KS)- known as 47,XXY is the set of symptoms that result from two or more X chromosomes in males. The primary features are infertility and small poorly functioning testicles. Epigenetics- genome does respond to external influences

Increased incidence in schizophrenia in those born after WW2 Dutch Famine and Chinese Famine of 1959-1961. In 2 million+ Swedish children born 1963-1983: those with 4-5 indicators of hardship had a 2.7x increased risk compared to those with none Dopamine transporter gene- associated with ADHD Note to self: for essay check out the genetic makeup of the criminal- base opinion on that if information is made available
