PR 109 Spring 2021 Assignment 6: Critical Review on MTV: Tana Turns 21 Youtube star Tana Mongeau has been a force to be reckoned with in the social media space since 2015. From insane, almost unbelievable, storytime videos about her stalker to hosting one of the most unsuccessful conventions in the industry in a long time, Tana’s millions of followers have hung onto her every word since that first video. After Tana’s failed convention, TanaCon, as well as her newly formed relationship with former Disney star and social media influencer, Jake Paul, Tana’s face has been in the spotlight non-stop. Just when you thought you’d seen enough of her, Tana just wrapped her own season of MTV: No Filter Tana Turns 21 on youtube. Whether you love or hate her, this season was something you did not want to miss. Season 1 opened up with Tana talking about her failed convention, TanaCon, and how she's shifting her focus to her clothing line and getting over her exboyfriend. The following episode, Tana and friends prepare to go on Wild ‘N Out and Jake Paul is introduced to Tana’s friend group as “someone who Tana has been getting to know” and episode 3 explores Tana and Jakes relationship more. In episode 4, a bombshell drops and audiences learn that Tana and Jake are now engaged and planning their wedding. The following couple of episodes show Tana, Jake, and the rest of the group celebrating Tana’s 21st birthday, wedding planning, VidCon, and some heated debates. Season one wraps up with (SPOILER ALERT!!) the marriage of Tana and Jake Paul, which in true influencer fashion, was star-

studded and full of scandals. As a fan of Tana myself, I can say that though the series was entertaining, production and editing did not make Tana look great. She was made to look like a brat and a bad friend and if you have ever seen any of Tana’s videos, you know her friends are her entire world. As someone who comes from a troubled past and rocky family situation, her friend group is her chosen family and treats them as such. Another complaint I would mention about the series was it was very short. Tana is known for her story time videos and insane life, so to only see a small part of her life left fans feeling empty by the end. Overall, MTV: No Filter Tana Turns 21 gave fans a small glimpse into the life of social media superstar, Tana Mongeau.
