Black Guerrilla Family (BGF) The Black Family began at San Quentin in 1966, later becoming the Black Vanguard. It became the BGF in 1971. George Jackson aka “Dragon”, ranking Black Panther, helped establish the BGF and introduced the Chinese Maoist philosophy.

Heavily involved in controlling drug traffic in southern CA, is expanding into central and northern CA. Has been known to infiltrate publicly funded community drug programs to gain access to the funds. Highly organized and has spread to other western states and the federal prison system.

EME Leadership •

Two rival factions have developed within the EME, each having its own leader.



No formalized rank structure, but within each institution or street setting there is generally an individual recognized as a “leader.” Based

Nuestra Familia (NF) Began at DVI in 1966, organized into a prison gang in 1967 at San Quentin. Began as a self protection group against EME exploitation. Crimin ally oriented gang with goal of controlling all drug trafficking in the community and illicit activities in CDC.

Due to defined chain of command and lines of authority, NF members were prosecuted from 1982-84 under the federal R.I.C.O. statutes. NF discontinued para-military system for a “category” system. Membe rs/associates refer to the NF as “O” for the organization. Members are referred to as “C” or carnales (brothers.)

NF Leadership/Membership •

Executi ve body of the NF is known as “La Mesa” and are selected from the leadership or Category III members.



Membe rship is Hispanic, recruited from northern CA.

NF Associates/Enemies Align with Norte/Norteno Hispanic gang members and BGF. Norther n Structure is actually a front for the NF. Enemie s include the AB, EME, southern faction of the TS, Fresno Bulldogs, and the “Surenos.” NF Discipline/Identifiers Minor infractions may result in a lethal assault. Disobe dience, cowardice, using heroin dropping out, informing will place them on the “hit” list.
