This is the Discussion Post from Unit 5...

Description

As per Wikipedia’s (2021) definition, “A content management system (CMS) is a computer software used to manage the creation and modification of digital content”. The author expands, adding that a common use for this tool is at an enterprise level and medium-size companies, and less common for small projects.

TechTerms (2021) explains, that the main goal of CMS is “to provide an intuitive user interface for building and modifying webpage content”, expanding on the explanation, the author mentions that a CMS “also provides a web publishing tool that allows one or more users to publish updates live on the Web”. With this differentiation, a CMS is divided into two parts, the editing component also known as “the content management application (CMA)” (TechTerms (2021)) and a publishing tool, also known as “the content delivery application (CDA)” (TechTerms (2021)). Is important to clarify that “these two components are integrated together in a CMS to streamline the web development process” (TechTerms (2021)).

In regards to the most important features available in a CMS, they are “indexing, search and retrieval, format management, revision control, and management” (Wikipedia (2021)).

To conclude this post I will cite TechTerms (2021), which provides a descriptive list of the most popular CMS, and they are:      

WordPress - free web software designed for creating template-based websites or blogs Blogger - Google's blogging tool designed specifically for maintaining a blog Joomla - a flexible web publishing tool that supports custom databases and extensions Drupal - an open-source platform often used for developing community-based sites Weebly - a web-based platform for building simple personal and business websites Wix - a collection of web publishing tools for creating a highly customizable website

To have a reference point and a better understanding of relevance and popularity, we can refer to statistical information of market share. Wikipedia (2021) mentions that “the most popular content management system is WordPress, used by 30% of all websites on the internet”.
